Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

No, I'm stumped as well.

Having said that, if the Grim One were to put in what sounds like the missing key-word, it might be a different matter....

You're on, Grimey. Give us something we can chew on, instead of a meaningless collection of adverbs and conjunctions.

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

Sorry folks, just finished 2 back to back 15-hour days at work. I thought it might be a little too vague, but this is the first chance I've had since the weekend to check in.

But first, Py, the av.....I....well....words fail me. Cracked up when I first saw it, though...

OK, as modified:

Into what water did pride fail to timely fall?

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

To be honest, that hint didn't help me. I have looked up all the references about pride that I could think of, and found jack.

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

You're looking for something really obscure, aren't you? Maybe you can give a hint in what book we have to search?

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

I didn't think it that obscure, but maybe I've ceded more significance to the event than others do in the context of things.

The Book is The Silmarillion....and, having seen The Clansman's earlier comment about Google, I've checked; this one can be found thru a web search...but I didn't say it!

Ok I have a feeling this may be referring to this

Quote:
For Isildur would not surrender it to Elrond and Cirdan who stood by. They counselled him to cast it into the fire of Orodruin nigh at hand...
And if that is correct then it would be The Great River (Anduin)

Quote:
...And they decended upon him at unawares in between the Greenwood and the Great River...... until he came to the River and plunged in. There the ring betrayed him and avenged its maker, for it slipped from the his finger as he swam, and it was lost in the water
From the Silmarillion...Of the Rings of Power and the Third age pp 353-353 of my book

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

A reasonable attempt, Wy, but no, one would have to go further back in time (and pages!) to find what I'm thinking of....you're onto something with rivers, though....

OK, someone put me out of my misery, and please accept my apologies for the insufficient specifications!

The final hint word is stones. Put them all together and what have you got?

Say therefore to the Lord of Nargothrond: Shut the doors of the fortress and go not abroad. Cast the stones of your pride into the loud river, that the creeping evil may not find the gate.
Silmarillion, Of Túrin Turambar.

Okay, I think what went wrong here is that you used so many synonyms that the lines don't "trigger" Pyan and my memory. I see that you're doing it in order to prevent a Google search which is something I can only cheer at, but it provide us with a new problem...

Also, the phrase "timely fall" is something that points at quite a lot of references so that's why I wasn't too sure where to look...

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

Yes, it was "fail to timely fall" that completely threw me off. I could not get past them. Pride falling is a very, very general reference, dating back to the roots of Judeo-Christian-Islamic theology. One sees it everywhere.

Still, we were stumped quite nicely. Perhaps if it were phrased "Into what was pride not cast", or something like that. Still, stumping Google searches is a good idea. I tried everything with "pride" and "timely fall" that I could, together with the keyword "Tolkien", and I got nothing (unless it was buried in search result 1,304,260). NOT THAT I WOULD HAVE USED SUCH AN ILLEGALLY OBTAINED ANSWER!!! I do have some pride, after all. When I'm beat, I'm beat, and I won't cheat. I was just frustratingly curious!
