His shield was red. As he came to the valley's brink, he set to his lips a great black horn and blew a ringing blast.

Bilbo.

Rory Brandybuck, to his daughter-in-law Esmeralda, at the Long-Expected Party, just after Bilbo has disappeared:
Quote:
‘There’s something fishy in this, my dear! I believe that mad Baggins is off again. Silly old fool. But why worry? He hasn’t taken the vittles with him.’ He called loudly to Frodo to send the wine round again.

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

When you consider how many questions have been posed in these threads, I'm amazed we've not run out....

Try this...
Where would you find Numinor?

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

(Not considered a serious answer, especially since it's in a book from the wrong Inkling, much less not on the authorized book list, but included for fun anyway)

In That Hideous Strength, the Chapter Entitled "They've Pulled Deep Heaven Down on Their Heads", p. 272 (MacMillan paperback, twenty-first printing, 1978, also known as "My Copy"!)

"Tell me, slave, what is Numinor?"
"The True West", said Ransom.

Suggested as one of Tolkien's letters, but my book is on loan at the moment...

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

We can find it in one of Tolkien's footnotes in Letter Number 131 To Milton Waldman:

Quote:
The Men of the Three Houses were rewarded for their valour and faithful alliance, by being allowed to dwell 'western-most of all mortals', in the great 'Atlantis' isle of Númenóre.*

* A name that Lewis derives from me and cannot be restrained from using, and mis-spelling as Numinor.
Though I'm perfectly fine with the Grim person having a go in order to do something about the grimness

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

Yes, I agree, Marky...his idea about the Letters was correct.

It's also in the main body of Letter 169, to Hugh Brogan:

Quote:
Your discovery of "Numinor" in C.S.L.'s That Hideous Strength is discovery of a plagiarism: well, not that, since he used the word, taken from my tales of the First and Second Ages, in the belief that they would soon appear.....The spelling Numinor is due to his hearing it and not seeing it.
Go for it, O Grim One....

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

Thank you, gentlemen. The Brogan letter was the one I had in mind, but lack of the book is the harbinger of taunting from Py and Marky in this game! (Good find on the Waldman letter, Marky...forgot all about that one.)

Right then. I'm thinking one more word might be necessary, but here goes nothing....

Into what did pride fail to timely fall?

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

A 2-day dearth of responses can ONLY mean that both Marky and Py are on vacation, or the hint is too ambiguous; say the word, and I'll throw in the additional word referenced before...

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

Sorry, Grim, long hours at work with the first really good mowing weather, and other things have conspired against me giving it any real perusal..I'll have a think today...

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

Don't mention work!

*Thinks wearily of long work hours looming with only the narrow margin of 4.5 hours sleep*

Not at all, your greenness! Like the new 'Cth', btw.

*Hies himself to bed before noggin bangs on keyboard...'Night!*

Re: The Tolkien Quoting Trivia

I must even confess to setting the books aside, and tried a Google search (I would not have submitted an answer so found). NUTHIN'.

I think we need a hint, although we should wait for Py to get back...

Help us, Obiwan Kenobi. You're our only hope (with apologies to George Lucas).
