I don't think he is human, or maybe he's just got something that's not human living parasitically inside him? Not a nice thing to contemplate. But throughout the book he feels and acts human - so does it matter whether he is or isn't?

Does the author even know?! My views kept on changing throughout the book. At first, I thought he definitely was; now that I've finished it, I think he's probably not.....but I wouldn't put money on it! The inability to cry at the end is meant to make us think that he realises he's not human, but there's masses of us who find it hard to cry. Maybe his treatment of Ryan in the final scene is more telling - this, to me, was so calculating, it was Robert's most 'inhuman' action of the whole book. But then again, the description of falling in love was very, very human...

Well... If looking (externally) human, acting for the most part human, and having human emotions makes you human, then yes, Robert is human. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and acts like a duck, it's a duck.

for a while i was thinking that maybe robert was created by the same company that ryan works for or maybe he made him or something like that (or maybe its because i just watch too much astro boy, who knows?), but as you read further into it the things robert describes they seem like they couldnt of possibly have been made by humans, i dunno its confusing but i totally loved the fact that his name is robert smith, it made me love the book even more.
