do you mean ever? (not never) and if you do, then you're wrong. In the first episode with Bille Piper, the one named Rose, Rose(after saying I may not have the brains but I have the brawns) she swings from a metal chain and knocks over the android(the living dummies) and causes it to fall into the monster controlling it. The Android is holding the anti-plastic which he confiscated from the doctor, who was trying to use it on the plastic monster, and destories the monster then gets her, mickey, and the doctor out of there. Which is in fact saving the day. Also in Parting of the Ways, where Christopher, or the ninth doctor, leaves the show(being replaced by Tennet), she uses the time vortex to save the doctor and wipe out the dilex(I spelled that wrong) and giving life to Jack(and I susecpt the others as well it just wasn't shown) and again saves the day. That's atleast twice(probaley more I just can't really think of anymore right now). I don't know about Martha seeing as I can't bring myself to watch any of the episodes after Doomsday(although I did watch a bit of the christmas speical involving Donna(Catherine Tate and that was just because I like Tate's antics). But Rose atleast twice saves the day.
I pick Rose, just because I think she's a perfect match for the doctor and I think one day, rose will be back. I've never met Martha so you can add that into the mix but in the end it will probaly always be Rose for me. Although I did like both Doctor's(9 and 10) but that was just a actor change not a character change.

Re: Martha vs Rose

Rose has saved the day. She did that whole looking into the tardis thing without the doctor's go ahead. Rose is more, action and reaction, where Martha is a thinker, like the doctor. The doctor needs a stronger personality than what I've seen from Martha so far. Martha is smart, but in a back alley knife fight, Rose would own her.

Re: Martha vs Rose

Does anyone else think that Micky was just getting interesting before they dumped him? Or that hanging around with Rose's family got a tad tedious after three years? Or that Martha is both gorgeous and powerful, so obviously she ain't gonna last.

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure Martha would find a subtler way of dispatching an assailant. Like pressure points in the neck, dead-legging and then chloroforming them ... She's a doctor, too, you know...

Re: Martha vs Rose

Don't get me wrong I think Rose is the brill . But the point I was making is that Martha isn't as good as Rose and I have seen eps where the Doctor gives Martha looks that say that he doesn't think Martha is very smart some times.

Well said, Kostmayer. Rose rules!

Re: Martha vs Rose

I really enjoyed Rose in the two series she was in, but I have to say Martha has done more for me in one series than Rose did in two (plus a Christmas Special).

I have rewatched all three series and I just can't get past Rose being so unintelligent. As a character I think she got much more out of her travels with the Doctor - she needed to be more worldly/universally wise and I think she finished up a much better person when she and the Doctor departed in Doomsday.

Martha has intelligence, better looks, and has a very different relationship with the doctor. She demands answers from him (Gridlock) whereas Rose was content with cryptic nonsense (The End of the World). I think the Doctor and Martha bring the best out of each other and that, in my opinon is the main point. The Doctor led Rose - yes she had her moments - but the Doctor was clearly the leader. The Doctor and Martha have more an even balanced relationship and I hope the two remain partners for a couple more series.

Catherine Tate's Donna on the other hand provides the Doctor with a constant negativity as she battles him and argues with him. It provides a dynamic we haven't seen before but I don't think I will enjoy it. A more even partnership is crucial for me and Martha wins every time!

Re: Martha vs Rose

I'm sorry but Martha has no strength as a character and I think Rose was a much better match for the Doctor. Than Martha was and I don't mean smartness wise.

I mean the fact that Rose put other people's feeling's before her own (not counting Mickey of course) but she did so more often than Martha did :. And I got to say this I wish that the Doctor had killed Martha in 42

Then I wouldn't have had to watch Freema's awful acting ANYMORE!

And as for Martha being better looking than Rose . Well I hate Martha so I think that Rose is way prettier than Martha will ever be !

And Billie is a way better actress than FREEMA!!! can ever hope to be. I'm sorry but Freema's acting SUCK'S!!!!

Re: Martha vs Rose

Martha V.S. Rose, I definitely go for Rose.

I have to admit, she isn't as pretty and smart, but she does love the Doctor. One thing I don't like (I won't use hate, that's a strong word) about Martha is that she always sits and waits for the Doctor to come to her. Rose tries to do things herself, as seen in "The Christmas Invasion" when the Doctor was out cold and she tried to do things 'his way'. This attribute is also seen in 'The Girl in The Fireplace' when the Doctor tells her to stay there but Rose goes to explore with Mickey. Marhta in her position would have stayed and waited.

Some people would interpret these actions as stupid or blundering, but I see these things as acts of bravery and love towards the Doctor. In the last Epidode with Eccleton ('The Parting of the Ways') Rose looks into the heart of the TARDIS just so she could go back to the Doctor. In the end, the Doctor saves her by regenerating himself. He might have done this for martha, but only out of responsibility to get her back to earth. Not love.

I'm not really going to comment on the actors because they don't really have anything to do with the story. I didn't really feel much when the tenth doctor was introduced. I mean who would? After all, David Tennant = eye candy

P.S. BBC has confirmed that Rose will somehow return from the parrallel univers for at least 3 episodes. Billie Piper did sign 3 seasons with Doctor Who and aims to be the first female tme lord.

But she wouldn't be the first. I can think of at least two before her: Romana, and the Rani. And wouldn't she have to be from Gallifrey?

(When it comes to someone who is not from Gallifrey becoming a Time Lord, the person with the best qualifications would have to be Captain Jack. He's undoubtedly had more experience than Rose travelling through time, and he's got the lifespan nailed without even the need for regeneration.)

Re: Martha vs Rose

I really really REALLY dont like Martha she just bores me to tear with the whole puppy love thing she has going on. Rose was strong and fiesty and could do things for herself. Martha is just a wet sponge.

I think Rose would make an awesome Time Lord

Re: Martha vs Rose

i agree - there's something about Rose I just don't like. Martha seems more like a real person, I always thought Rose sounded a bit 'scripted' - Martha seems more spontaneous.

Re: Martha vs Rose

It's interesting the way people have such different reactions to the same characters. Everyone in my family finds Martha almost unbearable, and we all loved Rose.

To me, Rose always seemed more natural and believable, and Martha conceited and pouty. She made it plain that she took it for granted that just because she was beautiful and she wanted the Doctor, he should want her -- never mind that he was still emotionally involved with the memory of Rose. She seemed to think he should just drop whatever he was feeling and respond to her.

Maybe if there had been no Rose I would have liked Martha better; probably I would have felt some sympathy because she had such a crush on a man who was usually so emotionally detached. But the fact that I think Freema can't act would still have been a factor.

I thought I would like her better on Torchwood, where her annoying attitude toward the Doctor wouldn't come into it. But on Torchwood she struck me as full-of-herself and smug. There were moments where she and Jack would smile at each other, and I knew the audience was supposed to feel some sort of emotional buzz at seeing them back together after all they had been through because of the Master, and now they were reunited. It was like they were on stage, the music came up, and everyone paused to give the audience time to applaud. And I just wanted them to get on with the story.

So, no, I'm not fond of Martha. And I adored Rose.

Re: Martha vs Rose

With Martha at times she was good and at times she was just DAMN IRRATATING!!!!! just sheer inconsistency with her. As for Rose she was alright, but too much focus on her & her family. So all-in-all it sways with me as to who is good, for a companion for the doctor, as it also depends as to who can do what and maintain consistency through-out the course of the show.

Re: Martha vs Rose

Definatley Rose though Martha is Ok.

But Cathrerine Tate is absolute rubbish,IMO she is not a funny comedienne or a good actress the sooner they get rid of her charactor Donna the better, for she is definatley spoiling it for me I had to switch it off last night.

She would be better off in Eastenders shouting "RICKAY"

That last sentence was for people in the UK that watch the soaps
