Sherlock Holmes Monument in Moscow

BBC NEWS | Europe | Moscow honours legendary Holmes

"A monument to the fictional British detective Sherlock Holmes has been unveiled in Moscow.

The statue, near the British embassy, shows a pensive Holmes standing, pipe in hand, with his companion, Dr Watson. Translations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories flourished in the former Soviet Union, and were made into a television series. "

It's good to know that such a famous fictional detective is still being honoured in other places than Britain.

Yes, a lovely touch to see two beloved literary characters like Holmes and Watson having a monument dedicated to them . . . . even if I'm not especially keen on the sculpting.

Good to see you, Curt! How was the time/space traveling? Well I don't like the sculpting either, don't they look like two old Red Army soldiers?

Thanks Lily! My voyage was exhausting, yet it held its own special rewards: the scenery was truly stunning!

LOL! Perhaps the government recycled two old statues of Lenin and Stalin and welded new heads on them (Uncle Joe was a pipe smoker after all)!

They seem to have that endearing quality that appeals to practically everyone.

Anyone got any suggestions as to why this should be?

Re: Sherlock Holmes Monument in Moscow

I was wondering if it was because of the nature of the stories - the villains are always caught and brought to justice (more often than not), as opposed to the not so clear cut boundaries between detective and criminal in modern dramas.
