29.05: Evolution of the Daleks

Spoilers for those who haven't watched it yet...you know, just in case

You'll be pleased to hear that I actually watched the whole episode this time!

First of all...Let us bow our heads and mourn Sec's death. No, I can't believe my favourite Dalek is dead! Damnit!! But one survived! There's hope still. As they like to remind everyone, they always survive. And I am very glad that they do (I'm probably one of the only people who is, though!)

I couldn't help thinking, while watching this...I wonder just how many times the Daleks have screamed "The Doctor! The enemy of the Daleks! The Doctor must die! Exterminate!" Because they must have said it at least four times in tonight's episode and yet they still haven't done it!

Anyway, I'm still trying to work out whether I enjoyed tonight's episode as much as the previous ones, so I'll hand this over to everyone else and see what you all thought!

Re: 29.05 Evolution of the Daleks

Didn't quite enjoy it as much as the others. The whole messing with the Dalek setup didn't work for me. They just about pulled it off in Dalek, with the last remaining Dalek starting to feel. But Humandalek hybrids? Thats just messing with a classic design

Hope they're done with the Daleks for a while.

Dr Who in Manhattan (Part 2)

Dave reckons we need a new thread for part 2 - so here it is!

Is it me - or was tonight's episode (part 2) awful? I was bored stiff but watched through to the bitter end because I just don't miss any of the doctor. Next week's episode looks brilliant but not wanting to give anything away for those taping tonight's episode or watching it tomorrow - it was dire!

Re: 29.05 Evolution of the Daleks

This wasn't my favourite episode of the series so far, but it wasn't bad. I agree that the human-dalek hybrids didn't quite feel right to me.

Next week's episode looks good, though!

Oops - I seem to have messed up. I did add a comment on this episode - tagged on the end of part 1 and Dave reckoned we needed a new thread so I started a new thread and lo and behold Hoopy beat me to it - so COULD THE POWERS THAT BE DELETE MY THREAD

TA VERY MUCH

My comment - once again is

Re: 29.05 Evolution of the Daleks

Yes, the Dalek-human hybrids weren't very good. When the other three Daleks starting rebelling and changing the plans, I was so hoping they would make more Daleks...but no, just humans with Dalek...well, you can hardly call them emotions. Tendencies, I guess! It was interesting to see a Dalek starting to think differently, but as I said after last week's episode, you just can't beat the classic Dalek. Leave them as they are!

And yes, the Daleks do need to be given a rest for a while. And then they (yes, I expect more of them to appear! ) will come back with guns (and whisks and plungers) blazing!

The monster/alien thingy next week looks very cool, from what I saw in the trailer for the next episode!

Oops, sorry Ship!

Hmmm... not as good as previous episodes, but still good. Thank the Gods that Delak Kahn (sp?) survived!

Was it just me hoping that the Doctor would fail to pull the panels off the top of the building?

Re: 29.05 Evolution of the Daleks

No, no! I was shouting "Fail! I like you, Doctor, but please, FAIL!" Hehe. I cheered when he dropped his screwdriver.

And man, I was so happy when I heard that Dalek say "Temporal shift!"

But nooo...Sec's dead. I need time to get over that...

Lenny, did you say something about "dark" being one of the themes? I cannot be certain, and it's a strange idea...but when the Daleks were a-floating and a-shooting, they said something. It might have been "die" (probably was, knowing them!). Or maybe "dark". Or perhaps it was just the sound of their laser things. *Shrugs*

Re: 29.05 Evolution of the Daleks

worst moment - a dalek looking around to see if anyone's listening

other worst moment: at the important moment of the biggest gamma ray flare in a thousand years hitting Earth, when the Doctor is about to foil the daleks in their plan, he drops the sonic screwdriver! Oopsie! Butterfingers! (has the Doctor ever dropped the sonic screwdriver before?)

Tonight's episode was mostly terrible - think of the small kids for whom this was their first ever Dalek experience, I bet they'll never hide behind anything while watching any Dalek episodes, because of first impressions.

Re: 29.05 Evolution of the Daleks

I did mention that I thought the theme was "darkness" a few threads back, yeah.

Haven't a clue if it was mentioned tonight.

All I can be sure about is that "Saxon" hasn't been mentioned for some time - first episode is a given, but none of the others, unless you can count the implication that the Master still lives from the New Earth episode.

Re: Dr Who in Manhattan (Part 2)

Oh dear - not good news. Had to miss tonight's ep at short notice so flipped on the ole video machine (to record from Freeview in widescreen)... then got to watch a DVD instead. And hey, guess what I noticed more than halfway through: the DVD remote also changes the Freeview channel. So most of my Dr Who tape is snooker. balls!

Still waiting to see tonight's ep, but the Saxon plot-thread is clearly "current" Britain... so I expect we'll get some next week. Since we've only had "Smith and Jones" in the present, then flipped via Shakespeare's England to New New York to (old) New York, there hasn't been a chance for any other reference, though obviously the Face of Boe has hinted at what's to come... I'd imagine we'll all be comparing notes on Saxon references in a week's time. (PS. What about the RTD bingo, this week? )

Re: 29.05 Evolution of the Daleks

i found it boooring.
and the whole idea of a darlek being nice, or niceish, just felt too much like that cyberman woman who cried and killed all her own kind. it just doesn't work when evil things suddenly go nice.

Re: 29.05 Evolution of the Daleks

I've merged the two threads. Spaceship - sorry I caused you to double post. I didn't find the episode that bad; not as bad as you suggested, but the standard this season has been very good, and it wasn't up to the same.

The humans with Dalek DNA were very reminiscent of Robo-men, only Robo-men were much better. Having said that, Ogrons seemed more useful and more interesting than the Pig-men too. But I guess these Daleks were running out of ideas and chances.

I also didn't see a mention of "darkness" this episode - and I thought that was a good theory Lenny!

I liked that!

But I wondered why the Doctor didn't tell the men of Hooverville to shoot at the eyesticks. They may have had a chance if they had done that.

The problem with the episode was, as has already been said, we knew that the Doctor had to fail in his attempt to remove the Dalekanium. We also knew that at least one Dalek would escape via a temporal shift. It completely lived up to expectations.

I hope they let the Daleks lie for a while. I think they have been heavily overused.

Re: 29.05 Evolution of the Daleks

Yes, I did expect the Doctor to fail at the top of the building. But that didn't stop me from shouting at him to do so (I do get so worked up when I watch Doctor Who!)

And Solomon's death was very predictable. You know that whenever someone starts talking about how "we're not so different!" and "we can work together!" to the Daleks, they're going to get EXTERMINATED!
