I found this just a little while ago.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Star Wars' R2-D2 to collect post

Seems like a fun idea, but I wonder how long it'll take before one gets taken as a souvenir! Whatever next!

There is a great spoof documentary on the Star Wars Episode III DVD about R2-D2, and how he couldn't find work after the original trilogy, being typecast, and spent time as a trashcan. He never worked as a mail box though.

And at least the R2D2 postboxes aren't mobile, like the real thing! I can't imagine having to chase after the postbox when I want to post a letter!
