Similar Writers to David Gemmell?

Heya,
i was wondering if anyone could recommend any other writers similar to David Gemmell as i have read almost all of his books excluding some of his really early stuff and books under a different alias.

He is my all time favourite writer and as hard as i look i can't really find any kind of writer that even comes close to David's style of writing.

If people can suggest other similar writers and books i would greatly appreciate it.

I am off from tomorrow but will be back on Sunday and will be able to check this thread and hopefully get some ideas so i can start the week with hopefully a great book.

Thanks in advance

I haven't read many Gemmell so can't really say who is similar.I have heard though that James Barclay has a similar style.I know Gemmell has been a big influence on him

Conn Iggulden, Stan Nicholls, James Barclay. Hows that for starters. There is also possibly Bernard Cornwell. Its a case of what you enjoy about Davids books as to who is good to recommend.

Re: Similar Writers to David Gemmell?

Thank you very much for the suggestions.

The thing i love about Gemmell's writing is the pace of them and the feel of the characters... the way they interact with eachother as well as the description of all the emotions without though totally drowning the person reading the book with them.

I have just ordered Dawnthief by James Barclay as it sounded the most appealing but will definitely also try the rest of the authors suggested(read Stan Nicholl's Orcs, very good book but was left a tad disappointed by the ending).

Thank you again for the suggestions

Re: Similar Writers to David Gemmell?

i read the first chapter of Dawnthief and had to put it down when he used the phrase 'Come to Daddy'!! thats so modern and seemed to out of place in a fantasy book. Does anyone else hate when modern terms are used in fantasy books or does it not bother you?

To be honest Modern terms are used to make it accessable to readers, although Ready Aim Fire is a modern war concept since the use of rifles it has to be used as it keeps things easier for the reader such as when dealing with bow work. Ready Aim Loose would be acceptable but a number of people dont like that sort of thing. Its just catch 22 I guess.
