waking up in the back of a transit van wasn't the best way to start the day, but being thrown out the doors onto the M4 before having a coffee and a cigarette quickly made it worse.

The flight had been smooth, with not even a hint of turbulence, yet when we touched down and the doors opened, I looked out on a wasteland that had not been there when I left, not two weeks ago.

First contact turns out to be a let down because it wasn't contact at all, the new moon just hung there, shining brightly, reflecting everything and doing absolutely nothing, like it had for past 40 years.
