The anime i watched too years ago and enjoy but just like Akira the manga is much better. The anime are only by half from the manga up till vol 6, after vol 6 to current volume 22 its a hole different story, characters.

You saw the anime you know FMA is a dark, thought provoking manga for a teenage fantasy like series. Thats what i always liked about it.

I'll have to read the Akira manga one day - it's something I've been meaning to do for a while. Come to think of it, it's been ages since I saw the film, too...

In terms of graphic novels, I've been reading manga: Trigun Maximum (Yasuhiro Nightow), You're Under Arrest (Kosuke Fujishima) and Ghost in the Shell (Masamune Shirow) - all old favourites.

I also found a stack of old comics tucked away somewhere, from back when Manga video used to release books and comics (these were the manga from the Street Fighter series, years ago), so I read those through, too.

Just to present a different view, I personally prefer the anime to the manga in terms of storyline and characters. The different way the homonculi were created and the tie-in with Trisha, and the whole thing with Dante, was much better IMO than the manga, which at the moment (I'm up to vol 20) just seems to be going on and on with nothing happening. Bringing in characters from Xing just added needless layers of complexity. Also, the anime had one of the best musical soundtracks ever.

I'm not, I have so many books waiting to be read, it'd be unfair for me to go gallavanting around with a comic book.

Have you seen there's Full metal alchemist 2 in anime? Its a remake but following the manga storyline. I watched a few episodes and there were big diferrences compared to the first anime. I think it was done because the fans of the manga complained about how different the anime was.

Yeah i know about that anime plan to watch it after i catch up to the manga volumes.

Harebrain
: Dante was typical shonen generic villain one of the few things i didnt like about the original anime. The manga has better bad guys, adds much more to the world, new characters.

Soundtrack has nothing to do with comparisons beteween manga and anime versions. Still FMA was quality anime despite the fillers.

Bringing in characters from Xing just added needless layers of complexity ?

Hehe thats what FMA manga or anime is hailed for. Its a dark, complex story for teenage/Shonen series.

Re: What comic books/graphic novels are you reading at the moment?

I've only just discovered the Bone graphic novels. I bought 1, 2 and 3 for very little indeed at a book sale and have been tracking down the rest. Am now short of Vol 4 and 9. I love them ... the Bones and that Red Dragon. All the characters are so very colourful and there always seems to be a surprise around the corner. I am enjoying them and am certainly glad for having bought them.

BRAVE AND THE BOLD 31: Superb study of the psychology of violence as the Atom enters the "lightning storm" of the green-haired monster's brain with an "experimental compound" to stop nonstop synoptic activity from killing the most vile villain in all comicdom. The neat ending gets more vulgar as I think about it. But as with all effective endings it won't mean much if you don't read the whole story first --- so no cheating!

SUPERMAN/BATMAN 68: Part one of a deferential retelling of what looks like J.W. Campbell's "Who Goes There?" Joe Casey's well-paced script sucked me right in and Adrian Syaf's art and Vicente Cifuentes's inks locked me in place so I couldn't budge. High hopes for the rest of this sf-ish arc.

Re: What comic books/graphic novels are you reading at the moment?

I've recently finished We3 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely (Vertigo). Three modified animals escapefrom a lab and are hunted down by the military. The only problem is that the cat, dog and rabbit are are equipped with mechanical armour and heavy weaponry.

A touching and thoughtful story about the relationship between and exploitation by people of animals, extremely well drawn. It is also mind-bogglingly violent. The rabbit is fantastic.

My wife is slowly reading Asterios Polyp. I'm sort of reading The Walking Dead, which I found quite weak.

Re: What comic books/graphic novels are you reading at the moment?

Just bought Neil Gaiman's Sandman: The Dream Hunters ... I had the priginal with the artwork by Amano that was all dreamy and surreal. This one is the same story but Gaiman works with P. Craig Russell and it's now in traditional comic book form. It's very, very different.

Took me a couple of reads to get past thinking it was just wrong somehow. I kept seeing the fox all pale and with a sharp face whereas here she's in a vibrant red kimono and has a rounded face. But I have always liked Russell's work and it's starting to grow on me.

I'll have to keep my eyes open for that one, Nesa - sounds like it might be worth a read. Coincidentally, I was rereading the original last night. There's something about Amano's art that just keeps drawing me back.
