Greetings people of Earth

Hi everyone, I'm a long time sci-fi fan from Australia.

You all have a great site here and I'm happy to have found a spot where open and hungry minds are welcome and celebrated.

It looks to me like pretty much any topic you can mention has a healthy discussion happening here, so I will likely be lurking about much of the place as time goes by.

I'd like to ask one favor of all who read this intro. I have posted a description of the first sci-fi book I recall reading in the book search forums, the title and author of which I have long since forgotten. If you have a few moments, please read it.

See you all around the boards sometime, ciao for now

Re: Greetings people of Earth

Only greetings to those of Earth? that's not speceist, it's planetist. What about the rest of us weirdos, then?
And; don't lurk, join in. The place is far mor enjoyable to those who participate, and you don't have to learn to tango, there are plenty more sedate, easily learnt activities. Most here don't bite; indeed, the tendency is to encourage the widest selection possible of opinions (of course there are exceptions; this place is a seething mass of exceptions, that's part of its strength)
If you were planning on joining the "Australia for world domination" league (personally I don't thing they've a chance of revolting against the cats, who now hold the post, but I gave up world domination years ago, so what do I know?) they tend to meet here in the introductions threads, since there's now a second world domination group in the lounge.
Warnings? I don't think I'm back on duty this week. Don't accept peanuts, risk the basement, annoy dragons or elder gods. That should keep you alive till someone fleshes out the details, unless you're a spammer, in which case nothing will.
Welcome in; it's considerably more difficult getting out.

Re: Greetings people of Earth

Well, I don't recognize the book right off (my memory seems to be letting me down a lot lately... I'm almost afraid to ask why... ) but wanted to welcome you to the Chronicles, nonetheless. As Chris says, join in and throw out your own opinions/ideas/tastes... makes the stew more flavorful the more you put in.

Here's hoping you get an answer to your query soon; and I look forward to seeing you around.

Re: Greetings people of Earth

Meowrr and Namaste. Just know that you are doomed. Escape is impossible and you really should not believe anyone who tells you they are quite sane by any accepted standard. In return we offer books, movies, music, cats and possibly chopsticks along with conversations on just about anything and everything along with peanuts, cakes, chocolate and whisky.

As for the basement, please feel free to visit. We're always hungering for visitors. A visit to the attic would be fine so long as you bring a basket of Gorgonzola with you. If you wish to bring any other kind of cheese check with Chrispenycate first. A visit to the piranha pool would require you to read them a chapter from Moby Dick. You might want to check with JD to see where to begin since they do not like to have the same bits read over.

Come visit the Tea Room and tell us about your favourite authors, movies, music ... It's always a good idea to bring something intriguing for the cat when visiting.

You will now be visited by a Tangerine Dragon, a Scotsman, a crazy bird in a fez, an Elder God, wise men, a pixie, a sword maiden ....

Like WS - I'll just say welcome. The welcome blurbs are tending to get very long and drawn out these days!!!!!!!!!!! You'd think they were writing a book!

Re: Greetings people of Earth

Welcome to the Chrons, Sandy!

I think I might as well give you the full list of warnings:

- Avoid talking about plumes, coffee, broadband
- Avoid peanuts at all costs
- Remember not to plunge into the pirahana pond without the prior reading of a chapter from some kind of nautical book (they've already 'read' Moby Dick and 20,000 Leagues under the Sea)
- Leather is eaten by Wally
- Dragonskin is frowned upon by Hoopy
- Offending the dragons, pixies, goblins, spiders, carnivourous plants, Shoggoths, Wally, and druids usually ends with a sticky mess on the carpet
- Any doors marked "Basement" or "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here" are generally to be avoided, unless you are heavily armed, armoured, and with a troop of guarded guides
- And anyone who claims to be sane is lying
- The all-singing, all-dancing troupe of mice in the basement are rather annoyed this days, on account of being forgotten, so don't make them angry... apparently they've got sharp teeth.

I don't think anymore have been added to that... if they have, then you'll probably pick them up as you go along.

Have fun!

Re: Greetings people of Earth

Speaking of the one who claims to be sane, I haven't seen him around for a while. Perhaps he really did find his sanity and has gone off to explore the wider world!

Greetings, by the way! Welcome to the Chron, a magical place, we're on our way there, toys in their millions, all under one roof...oh, wait, that's the Toys R Us advert... (Think I'm a bit delirious today...)

Anyhoos, welcome!

Re: Greetings people of Earth

Tau Zero. If you look at some of the older introduction threads, you'll see him boldly claiming to be sane (and calling me a lobster and accusing me of being late, how rude). Hopefully he hasn't gone for good and is just taking a respite for a while.

Re: Greetings people of Earth

Perhaps he was like the Dean - so mad, that he was in a permanent hallucination that he was in fact, sane! It's the old dried frog pills that do it, you know...

Re: Greetings people of Earth

Haha! A lobster. I think even you would prefer orange newt to lobster, right?

I'll have to look out for him, methinks. Then we can jump him and steal his sanity! Or get SA to do it in. *evil grin*

Re: Greetings people of Earth

The Dean was "Born to Rune"
Unlike Rincewind who was merely "Born to Run"
