AHHH come on, none of the characters have a British accent when I am reading it. Of course I am reading it in the middle of the US.

There may have been a thread about casting a movie, but not an HBO series. Your suggestions are motion picture casting with a $200,000,000 budget in mind. The point of this thread is to set realistic casting suggestions along the lines of Deadwood or Rome. Before those shows who had would have recognized Timothy Olyphant, Robin Wiegart, Kevin McKidd or Indira Varma for their previous work? Sure you may have seen them in a thing or ten but would you (or the general public) have really known who they were? Probably not. I think casting a movie star who's faded a bit (or alot) is more likely than one who's not. TV stars are always climbing the ladder to get into movies and an HBO is definately a rung, wouldn't you say?

I like Lucy Lawless for Brienne of Tarth. I know she's kinda busy with BSG, not to mention that fact that she's short and hot but they uglied up Charlize Theron for Monster, eh? If not her, maybe the Eastern European athlete form Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Fran Stella Noskovich Der Vinivisckvy (Missi Pyle).

Said it a year ago after Rome first aired and i'll say it again - Kevin Mckidd is Ned Stark.

Well, on the set would be fine. Just not on the screen. Honestly, though, when was the last time a Yank pulled off a decent British accent? Case in point - Keanu Reeves, Bram Stoker's Dracula. As opposed to say, Hugh Laurie in House, or Hugh Jackman in X-Men.... I could go on, but I'm supposed to be working.

Re: Is it okay to discuss casting for the HBO series?

Actually, the mention of Australian accents relied me of a New Zealand actor who is pretty good at doing other accents, namely Alan Dale, one of those guys whose name you probably don't recognise but then you look at a picture and go, "Oh, him". Recently he's been in 24 and Lost, was a regular on The OC and has a recurring role on Ugly Betty. He could be reasonable in the adaption, perhaps as Kevan, if not Tywin himself?

Who said anyone has to speak with a British accent?

(ducks as he realizes he is on a British site)

Honestly though I have to agree with you for what ever reason most Americans seem to have a much harder time adding an accent then European actors have dropping theirs. And the end result of a poor accent really can ruin a show.

What's great about this thread is you really can't throw out names that people have heard of and be realistic, so its going to be "how about that one guy from blank, you know the one with the mole and the crazy hair." Then everyone goes huh.......(google) ........OHHHHH him!!!

I think McKidd can play Eddard, but when I look at him and what I picture Ned to look like, it just doesn't work. Morality wise they seem very similar, atleast Vorenus from the first season with his sense of honor and loyalty...The second season he seems to be heading down a different path, but looks wise they seem total opposite to me. By the time Rome is done and if casting for the series begins, he should be free. I'd support it, but he's not 100 percent what I pictured. I'd need to see him with long dark hair and a beard. I wonder how Ray stevenson would do as The Hound, I like him as Pullo and he's a tall, but not so monstrous an actor so maybe he'd fit the part. Maybe too old though. I think that would be one of the hardest roles to cast. Maybe it's just be being biased over my favorite character and I want him to be perfect though.

Re: Is it okay to discuss casting for the HBO series?

Alan Dale as Tywin I think could work. I'd have issues with watching a man I know best from Neighbours (that'll mean nothing to our American friends) portray the most ruthless of ruthless lords, but I reckon he could pull it off.

She'll probably be too old by then, but I think Emily Browning from Lemony Snicket... would make for a good Meera.

Re: Is it okay to discuss casting for the HBO series?

Personally, I'm tired of just about every freaking fantasy/sci-fi movie I've seen having characters with "british" or "aussie" accents. We got enough of that in LOTR (which is fine considering Tolkien's homeland).
But dammit, Martin is an American and I, for one, would like to see this HBO series (assuming it makes it to cable) with characters who speak...well....normal.
I figure anyone who lives above Kings Landing talks like the folks do where I grew up - country folk.

Id love that. Imagine Roose Bolton with an Appalachian drawl.
Hey, T-Bag from Prison Break could be a decent Roose Bolton...

Yes, I think he probably would

But yes, HBO being HBO, there aren;t going to be any "stars" in this series, most likely. They'll spend so much on the sets and props that they have to go for virtual unknowns again. Not that that is a bad thing - just look at Rome - wonderful casting.

But no, Kevin McKidd isn't really old enough to be Ned, I don't think. Besides, it's unlikely they'd cast any of the Rome actors in aSoIaF. That said, Polly Walker would make a wonderful Cersei.
