Re: Ohmygodohmygod It makes me wonder why bother doing any? If he trusts these people to write every other episode to an acceptible standard, why insist on writing one? Does he expect it to be far better than the rest, for some reason, or will it be one that is the most important - Ned's death in aGoT, the Red Wedding in aSoS.... Just seems strange.

Re: Ohmygodohmygod I figured he would handle either the big scenes or the ones he wants to get just right, like maybe Tyrion-heavy episodes. plus Im sure he just wants to do it. He has written for series before, Im sure he'd like his name on some of his own work.

Re: Ohmygodohmygod I can't imagine it wouldn't be called 'George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire', isn't that enough recognition....? But I see your point, I guess. As long as it doesn't cut too far into novel-writing time.

Re: Ohmygodohmygod Actually I thought he would write the first episodes because a first impression has the longest impact. It kind of sets the tone and I think GRRM is somewhat sensitive to his rabid fans (i.e. us) and tyring to get others hooked on the series, even if most will never pick up the books (i.e. the rest of the world).

Re: Ohmygodohmygod Was just musing, and a couple of folks seem to think that ASoIaF wouldnt last more than a few seasons on HBO. So of the authors on the Chronicles, Tolkein has 15k posts, Martin has 11k posts and Rowling has 9k posts. I think the next highest has 1.5k posts. Seems to me that there is sufficient interest in Martins storytelling that the shows would draw great ratings even before word of mouth struck. I can see the show doing very well, but again it will largely depend on their ability to keep budget in check. And I'd be willing to bet its safe to say, we all know alot of people who would love the plot but don't have the patience to read the books. (I'd say about 85% of the people i know don't read other than the newspaper.)

Re: Ohmygodohmygod I'm not sure what kind of fan base they thought they had in tow for a series on a dysfunctional family running a funeral home, but that did alright. Or for a brutal prison series, but that's done just fine. Drawing people it to watch has almost as much to do with the quality of the overall production as it does with the base material. Obviously no guarantees with HBO cancelling both Deadwood and Carnival which had a lot of devotees, but it certainly isn't dead in the water do to the subject matter.

Re: Ohmygodohmygod It was my understanding they were naming it "Winter". Or, at least preliminarily, using that as a title. I think it would be great. "A Song of Ice and Fire" is far too long a title for a TV show, and adding GRRM's name to it would be an awful idea. It needs to be something flashy, contemporary, and intriguing to be a hit among a non-fantasy TV audience. Sopranos Big Love Deadwood Six Feet Under Rome ---See the pattern?

Re: Ohmygodohmygod Why on Earth would they change a title that already has recognition value amongst not only fans, but say folks who frequent the rest of this website, not to mention anyone who may have picked it up in a store, or seen a reference in a newspaper or on a website? I assumed each season would be named for the books, ie A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, etc... Winter doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, I feel. If they want something short they could always go with 'GRRM's ASoIaF: AGoT.'

Re: Ohmygodohmygod Hehe Oh Winter's Sorrow...you went and said FOX. I have been (privately, thankfully) coming up with how FOX would cast the series. I guess I would call it the anti speculation, or who would most horribly fulfil the role... For example...Tyrion: Gary Coleman, Cersei: Nicole Richie, Eddard: Gilbert Godfreid I will save some of my other putrified choices, but after those 3 I think my criteria is evident. "What you talking 'bout Cersei!!"

Re: Ohmygodohmygod Gilbert Gottfried as Ned?!?! I couldn't think of a worse choice. As for calling the show Winter, isn't that only half the story? Or does that tell us who eventually wins? Mayhaps (I'm the new Lord of the Crossing) the title should be Ice and Fire, or Seasons. How about something that sums up the political machinations, like The Iron Throne? Seeing how the War of the Roses was an inspiration for the series, how about Wolves and Lions or something stupid like Beast Wars?
