Or the Zombies "she's not there" (no, nobody's that old; but I could sing it for you) Or them "here comes the night", Buffalo Springfield "for what it's worth" (Something's happening in here, what it is ain't exactly clear - remember. How old (and how weird) are you thinking: and when do you need this?
I can't believe this Chris - She's not there - Zombies, is actually my favourite single and the first single I ever purchased with my own money. So yes I am that old.

I think your idea of too easy and mine are probably slightly different. I would have had no idea that was Dave Brubeck and I am definately going to use this.

The quiz is on 26th so I have to have the printing done by about 20th or I'll be having sleepless nights. There are 5 rounds, 1) tv, film musical (i can do this without help) 2) Mix bag (all sorts of silly stuff like for instance last year me playing road to Amirrillo badly on the violin) This is where the jazz and folk come in potentially 3) classical 4) and lastly the Mad Medly where a series of snippets are played in quick succsssion. The first name of the composser or artist makes a letter which combines to make the name of a composer or artist or band. Again, as I want to really have a wide scope I am trying to get all sorts ie some Jazz, folk etc in here too.

I also do some picture rounds and conundrums that people can be filling in at will throughout the quiz.

Jazz. I know no Jazz what so ever and have been criticised for not including any. Therefore it has to be something pretty obvious and popular and I can't think of any.
Well I can think of 3 'classic' classical music tracks used in advertising.
1) The "Hovis" music. The ad was some kid pushing his bike up a cobbly road circa 1940s delivering bread to an old lady from the shops. It's Dvorak's "New World" symphony 9
2) The "Hamlet" music. The famous Russ Abbott ads. That's Bach "Air on the G String" (steady)
3) The "Old Spice" music. Also appeared in the film Excalibur when Arthur rides to confront Mordred. That's "O Fortuna" from Carmen Burana.

As for Jazz, depends if you want instrumental jazz or lyrical jazz. I'm guessing for the music quiz you'll want lyrical? Anything by Ella Fitzgerald (Mack the Knife is a classic) or Duke Ellington should do.

Winter Sorrow, many many thanks, my problem is that this is year 3 of the quiz and I have picked off the easy ones. You won't believe it but I've done all of these and also Mac the knife. Maybe I should have listed which ones I've done: this was last years.

Strauss, Sunrise
The ballad of Mac the knife
From the three penny opera
Handel, Zadoc the priest
Petit, Jean de Florette theme
Claire de Lune
Cavatina
Greig (pyre Gynt)
hall of the mountain king
The heart asks for pleasure
Romeo and Juliet, dance of the knights
Handals saraband
Mozart’s marriage of Figaro
Hooked on Tchaikovsjy

And the year before was

Beethoven Sympthony No 6
Verdi anvil chorus
Bizet toredor song
Khackaturian – Adagio of sparticus
Orff O Fortuna
Puchini Madam butterfly
Dvorgak new world symphony
Bach’s toccata and fugue
Bach’s Air on G String
Delibes Flower duet
Puccini, Nessun Dorma
Piano Concerto no1 – Tchaikovsky
Flight of the bumble bee – Rimsky Korsakov
Symphony no 40 - Mozart
Rhapsody in Blue – Gershwin
Karelia Suite - Sibelius

So I am worried I might have covered a lot of the popular ones

Re: Help wanted

What about Samuel Osbourne Barber's "Adagio For Strings" ? That one is very commonly known, yet still not too obvious.

Except for that, maybe Mozarts Queen of the Night, Offenbachs Infernal Gallop, Ravels Bolero, Rossini's Overture from The Thieving Magpie.. Maybe something from the Spring part of Vivaldis Four Seasons

Maybe Wagners Ride of the Valkyries?

Hiawatha didn't care too much,
'Bout Minihaha and her tender touch.
So she took him to the silver stream.....
etc.

Re: Help wanted

Wow

thanks for all the suggestions guys. I love all of them. I love Spaceman - a brilliant idea and 99 Red Balloons and definatley Wig Wam Bam. All teh classical suggestions are brilliant too. Save for Ravel's Balero which I've done before as part of the mad medley they are all useable. For Jazz I think i need something really classical Jazz like - if you see what I mean, for the one or 2 Jazz boffs in the pub.

I can't thank you all enough for your help and also Chrispennycat for his kind email. You are all lovely people

PS with all this material I might have to do 2 quizzes

I would HappyHippo but all the questions rely on playing snippets of music and as I take the music from live playing, records, tapes and CD's I have to record it on audio tape. It's not really possisble to do therefore unless anyone technical knows a way of converting audio tape to something I can email you.

Sorry about that.

PS thinking about it I could post the picture round. I'll do it once I've written it

Just dropping in to wish luck for tomorrow; not that you require luck, with the preparation you've done.

Of course I know how to E-mail audio files (and convert, prepare, edit, digest) but nobody understands my explations when I'm not being technical; if I started speaking pure geek, you'd need a translator to pass the message that I was actually talking, not gibbering.
