From ASoS: "Your lord father had asked for the crimson of your House, and it was that color I set out to infuse into the metal. But Valyrian steel is stubborn. These old swords remember, it is said, and they do not change easily. I worked half a hundred spells and brightened the red time and time again, but always the color would darken, as if the blade was drinking the sun from it. And some folds would not take the red at all, as you can see."

I wonder if Tyrion will find Brightroar while across the narrow sea.

Thanks for that Lady Blackfyre - it was starting to drive me a bit mental but I just couldn't be bothered to search through the books!!! I was halfway there... not bad going for me...

Oho! Wouldn't that be something. Revenge would certainly be sweeter when tainted red with valyrian steel and dragon's fire.

What if a Stark came into possession of Brightroar? Could you see Rickon wielding Brightroar against King Tommen and his red sword?

This completely stumped me, so I had to look it up. For all the other ignorant people like me, Brightroar is the ancient ancestral sword of House Lannister but was lost when King Tommen II when to Valyria.
So to me, it could just be that Tywin melted down Ice because the swine was jealous that House Stark still had their sword. The Git.

I thought that Brightroar was lost when Tommen II's ship sank, and therefore is at the bottom of some distant sea. I'm probably wrong, of course.

Well yes offcourse, he melted down ince, because te lannisters are proud and a important usually holds valyrian steel, they did not though at least not longer.

So when he got ice handed to him, he made two valyrian swords of it for house Lannister

Maybe patchface knows where the sunken sword is after all he was under the sea. What ever happened to the Targ swords?

Good question. We know Blackfyre was given to Daemon Blackfyre and the last of his line was killed on the Steps. I assume if he had it with him then it was brought back to King's Landing.

The other one is most likely in King's Landing as well, Aerys would probably have had it with him when he died. Or maybe Rhaegar had it.

Re: The Swords that were ice

Continuing there:
Right at the beginning of AGoT Ice is introduced.
It isn't said how long it had been the sword of the Starks.

It goes al follows: " ... It was as wide across as a man's hand, and taller even than Robb. The blade was Valyrian steel, spell forged and dark as smoke. ... "

Dark as smoke => black
black => Blackfyre

A reward Ned got after the victory over the Targaryen ?

Re: The Swords that were ice

Neds not the type to rename a sword. He had too much respect for that. He would have told his sons of his accomplishment were he to speak of it and ask them to respect a fallen opponent. Of course he wouldnt have spoken of it but he definitely wouldnt have dishonored an adversary no matter how heinous they were by renaming a sword.

Maybe Robert would have handed it to him and renamed it Ice without letting Ned know. But I dont know....

Just my thoughts.

I thought Ice had been the Stark's for a lot longer than that...

Cully, that's my impression also. I figure Ice had been around since before the Targaryen conquest.

OK, brain is dead right now, but didn't the Targaryens bring Valyrian steel with them?
