Clare Bell's 'The Named' (Ratha) series. Check out Amazon.com USA for how many 5 star reviews it has!

Mary Hoffman's Stravaganza has been one of my favourites since I picked up the first book. If you like historical fiction mixed in with your fantasy it's an excellent option.

Have posted about these before but they are very good:

The Elements of Lore
The Spook's Apprentice
Shadowmancer by GP Taylor.

Thanks, Alex. I thouight I might have to do the naff thing of recommending my own books!

The Stravagnza series is so far:

City of Masks
City of Stars
City of Flowers

And City of Secrets is out this July with City of Ships to follow in 2010.

There, I've been naff after all.

Hmmm, some of these recommendations seem a little out there for Young Adults.

Example (without picking on anyone!): Feist's Riftwar stuff isn't something I'd hand to my 12-year-old. I like it, but she's not ready for it....

I can recommend a classic that's regularly heralded as such for young readers: Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea series. Definitely the first 3; I haven't been back to it to read the stuff that came out after those.

I quite agree; the first three are marvellous. I have read the others but found them very disappointing.

FightGame and FireFire fight by Kate Wild? There's a gypsy hero and all sorts of shenanigans. Yes, I'm Kate Wild lol. Really enjoyed reading what everyone else has put on their list. Can I just add Skellig by David Almond, but it isn't a series, its just so well written and uplifting.

Has "The Dark is Rising" been suggested?

Apart from that there are a lot of good ideas on here. many I'll have to go and take a look at myself
