The Word Series

Because of the success of Brook's Shannara series readers can overlook other series he has written

This is a nice trilogy -

Running With The Demon
Knight of the Word
Angel Fire East

I actually read this series before reading any of his other books

Has anyone else read this series and what did you think of it?

I loved that one- I loved how he had a werewolf in there! So cool! I really enjoyed the Knight of the Word- great stuff! The man is such an excellent writer!

Re: The Word Series

I liked how he blended horror with fantasy. And wish he would return to this kind of dark fantasy story as he seems quite good at it

Re: The Word Series

I read Running With the Demon. I have Knight of The Word but haven't gotten to it yet. Actually, I started it. I liked RWTD, but not as much as the Shannara series I guess. I thought the characterization was great, and I loved surprise twist at the end. I'm wondering though, does Knight of The Word move any faster, because RWTD was a bit slow to start.

Re: The Word Series

I think the 2nd and the 3rd book in this series are faster paced. I think this is because the character's have already been established in the first book. They seem to interact better and the stories have a tenser feel to them. Not to mention Fern matures in the these books and that brings more elements into the plots too

Re: The Word Series

I might have to read that next. I started it, and he was having those apocalyptic visions again, and at first I thought they had failed and it had all gone to crap. But then it went back to the story. I still can't figure out if that's a futuristic vision he keeps seeing, or some sort of alternate dimension thing.

Re: The Word Series

I always felt he was seeing into another realm. But it's one of those things that Brooks is never clear on and allows readers to decide for themselves

UNFINISHED

I've read the entire trilogy, all in one go, and loved it, however it all just felt like ONE book to me ...might have been the reading it all at once

But seriously the way he left it off, it seems that the true battle between the WORD and the VOID is only just beginning.

I consider this the PRELUDE book in a series Terry has to come back to and finish:

FINDO on the path of being the VOID's General
JOHN ROSS (JR) NEWARK still no more than a "little light of hope for the WORD" as a champion... still many temptations and barriers for the VOID to put in his way

Like I said UNFINISHED

Have to agree with this, I loved "The Word And The Void", but I think more work definitely needs to be done on it, as the storyline just didn't seem closed. I think by doing that Brooks was allowing for the possibility that he would want to write additions to it later, and maybe leaving himself a place to slot them in.

Re: The Word Series

I felt it quickly became clear John's visions are what would come to pass if he failed in his mission.
I thought this was a great series and definately left the ending open enough to carry on with more books - and then Armageddons Children came on the scene. Not read this one yet.
After giving up on Phillip Pulmans "His Dark Materials" because:
1. good story concepts but just not made exciting enough
2. I just don't like the main character, an annoying 14 year old girl
I thought it might be because I cannot identify with such a young female heroine.
The Word and the Voids Nest Freemark character blow's away that theory where she is around 14 for most of the first book.

Well observed characters in this trilogy, I got a really good feel for the aging and development of the characters.

The battle between the Word and the Void is meant to be eternal, I don't think we will ever see one side win out over the other in this series.

Re: The Word Series

I read this whole series and really liked them! His new book, Armageddon's Children, is the start of a new series that takes place after the Word and Void series and before the Shannara series.

Re: The Word Series

Armageddons Children I consider merely another book in the WORD and VOID Series, FINALLY ! we continue the battle left UNFINSIHED in ANGEL FIRE EAST !

My feelings towards the tie in with the SHANNARA series is described as ambivalent as best as I never was much of a fan off that series.

A big appeal for me in this series was that it was an URBAN fantasy series, emphasis on the URBAN, with the tie in its just FANTASY (dwarf, trolls, elves).

Guess I'll just wait and see
