Eastercon 2007 Cancelled

CONVOY CANCELLED. As warned in _Ansible_ 230, the 2007 Eastercon needed
a hefty membership boost and had committed itself to getting further
assurances about Adelphi Hotel security in order to continue. One or both
failed to materialize, and the cancellation was announced on 31 October.
The Convoy bid was assembled late in the day when no one else was
prepared to bid for the 2007 event. Now, though, plans for a last-minute
replacement -- to be held over Easter, though probably on a smaller scale
than Eastercon -- are being energetically discussed.

6-9 Apr 07 [] CONVOY (Eastercon), Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool: CANCELLED.
Refunds will follow. Contact Convoy, 81 Western Rd, London, E13 9JE.
Watch this space for a possible alternative.

Re: Eastercon 2007 Cancelled

That was a bad choice of Hotel by the committee, more for nostalgia than anything else, ideal Hotel for a con. shame about all the thieves there and that is just the staff, quite a few people like me must have the same thought that they would not go back there for a con.

Still there is always ORBITAL in 08 hope to see some of you there

That's a bloody shame - there's always Fantasycon via the BFS, though.

If BFS weren't so biased in their awards, I would go to the Nottingham events.

VALKO what makes you think that the BFS AWARDS are biased they a fair vote, you have to be a member to vote.
Unfortunately there are a lot of horror fans who are members and votes count, one vote per member so there is no bias. I am a long time member and always vote for the fantasy I have read, there is a prelimary vote then the list is made up from that for the final voting list.
so the solution is become a member and VOTE. otherwise in your misguided view you won't see it as it actully happens.

If the horror authors win the majority of the awards - which certainly seems the case - Then perhaps the BFS should change its name to the BHS (oops no, that's a clothing store)
You'd think someone would have worked it out by now that seperate categories are needed. Where's the recognition for authors such as Feist, Gemmell, Martin, Erikson?
For instance: Why wasn't a special award given postumously to David Gemmell this year?
You've already stated that the vast majority of members that vote are Horror readers so where is the incentive for fantasy readers to join?

Re: Eastercon 2007 Cancelled

It's sad that Eastercon is cancelled. Fantasycon then I guess, this year's was nice.
Personally I didn't even attend the awards ceremony at fantasycon. I didn't know any of the authors, so it would be weird to go and it just didn't fit in my schedule.
I'm also more of a fantasy fan, but during the con I didn't feel like the horror genre was dominant.

I'm in general not really a fan of awards. The general system is just wrong; but is this a reason not to attend a con? It would be like you not showing up because there is an author you dislike. You're not forced to speak to him/her.
Feist was in some interesting lectures this year and I think it's more interesting to hear those than some speech thanking others for thanking himself with an award.

There are seperate categories at least six plus one special:The Karl Edward Wagner award, who was a long time member and fan of the BFS you may heard of him wrote fantasy and some horror, there was a memorial service at Fantasycon for David, Feist was a GOH as was Neil Gaiman both write fantasy, there has been so many fantasy authors at the con over the years some paying there way as they considered it a good con.

If the fantasy fans don't vote myself being one and I vote, that leaves the way open for the horror fans to have a clear run.

Benefits of joining at least 4 publications a year cheaper rate for F/Con if you are an aspiring Author help and guidence free from the pro,s.
why don,t you check out the website or go to one of the open nights they're free, the xmas one is next month if you can make it to London.

Or you can be sit on the fence and be a pessimist moaning about it.

Re: Eastercon 2007 Cancelled

I wrote a lengthy reply to your last post but for some reason it didn't post.
So to keep it short: I wasn't moaning, just making observations based on the awards over the years.

Re: Eastercon 2007 Cancelled

Yeh, I was planning to go too. It's a great shame, but hopefully they can come up with a replacement. As for FantasyCon, it's also a lot of fun and the one this year had a much better attendance than some of the others I've been too. As for the voting, I guess it will always depend on the membership. These things swing around from genre to genre and I'm sure the fantasy side will get it's turn again. Of course, we could get into a huge debate about genre boundaries anyway...but that's probably not a good idea!
