Well, I will do anyway, unless someone beats me to it. ![]() --- You have TEN bags in front of you. You also have some SCALES (the sort with measurements on, like bathroom scales). NINE bags contain real gold coins. ONE bag contains counterfeit coins. Each gold coin weighs 100g. Each counterfeit coin weighs 101g. Using the scales ONCE*, work out which bag contains the counterfeit coins Enjoy! *When I say once, I mean that you can put one set of things on, and take that whole set off. You can't put something on and keep on adding to it, or take single things from it. Think of what is put on as a single object. |

Take one coin from the first bag, two from the second, three from the third and so on up to ten from the tenth. Put all the collected coins onto the scales. There will be 55 coins. If they all weighed 100g the total weight would be 5500g. BUT one bags has heavier coins. Say it was bag three (three coins taken) then the scales will show 5503g, if it was bag seven (seven coins taken) the scales will show 5007g. However many grams over 5500g the scales show is the number of the bag in the line containing the heavy coins. Last edited by mosaix; 19th February 2007 at 12:38 AM. | |

--- Right, 'nother for y'all: You have EIGHT balls. And you have a pair of scales (the balancing sort where you put something on both sides) that you can only use TWICE. SEVEN balls are iron. ONE ball is counterfeit. The counterfeit ball weighs a bit more than the iron balls. How can you work out which ball is counterfeit? | |

OK split the balls into 3 groups. 3 balls, 3 balls, 2 balls First weighing: 3 against 3 If the two 3 ball groups weigh the same: weigh the the 2 balls in the remaining group against each other to find the heaviest. If the two 3 ball groups are different: take two from the heaviest group and weigh these. If these are different the heaviest is the one, if the two are the same the remaining ball is the one. | |
