Smile Burning Water

I'm current doing an art project along the themes of water.
I'm reminded of projects involing Alkali (sp?) metals in which water was a reactant.
I was wondering if any of you might have any other examples of which water could be "burnt".
Eg.
- Chip pan fires (adding water exacerbates the situation)
- Sodium peroxide mixed with zinc powder requires water to start the reaction.
- Fire breathing (?)

I'm more interested in examples which are more common to people in every day life.
(please avoid statements such as water cannont be burnt etc, i'm aware of the chemistry(physics) of fire - the purpose of this is for art!)

Thanks

Re: Burning Water

Huh. I thought you were talking about the Mercedes Lackey book of the same name. Sorry, can't help you, but good luck!

Re: Burning Water

There's always the opposite; combining H2 and O2 to make water. However, i believe the reaction is explosive.

Re: Burning Water

I'm not sure, but at extreme temperatures, wouldn't the water molecules break up to form Hydrogen and Oxygen ? Fuel and oxidant simultaneously STAND Back.

Re: Burning Water

Caution: Sodium is one of the metals that burns in contact with water. It is a very volatile reaction from what I understand and quite dangerous. *

*Don't try this at home.

Re: Burning Water

Sodium will ignite on contact with water and burn with a yellow flame. Potassium is a stronger reaction and burns with a purple flame. These elements cannot come in contact with bare skin!

Phosphorus is extremely dangerous in pure forms. It may ignite in air! Do not even attempt trying to play with this stuff!

Water is extremely stable. Therefore to dissasociate the two element by adding energy requires more heat than one can easily provide. Also, as soon as the elements cool, they will combine once more.
