My book falls between genres Can anyone help with this? My novel has a touch of sci fi but is still kind of mainstream. (Think maybe The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger) I feel it may be rejected by the many mainstream publishers who state NO SF in their guidelines. But I still don't think it's heavy sci fi enough for a specialist SF publisher to take on. I feel it would be rejected by both types of publishers for falling outside of the genre they want. I don't even know what genre it would be in. Literary? Who knows. I'm pretty clueless about the whole game, as you can probably tell. Bearing in mind I haven't even approached an agent yet, as many advise to do. Do agents also have specific genres they cater to? Oh woe I'm so confused and on top of all that I haven't even finished the book yet...

Re: My book falls between genres I have found that some of the smaller Publishers are not so genre driven, I have been doing some agent work with a new small publishing house and they are accepting any submissions at present. They are now starting to get quite busy and the timescales for a response on a submission is out to 8 weeks. They have now accepted 2 authors i have submitted to them 1 is a fantasy novel out later this year and the other is a young adults / Kids book. They are also publishing a thriller, a horror and a chicklit book in the coming weeks. So as you can see multi genre, as to a book that crosses the genre, i think they will take the book if its good based on the book, not which genre it should sit in. Now if you want to know more PM me and i can talk in more depth..in not trying to be vague but also aware that i dont want brian to think im soliciting. im not, im just trying to help.

Re: My book falls between genres Personally I'd submit to agents directly - if it's print worthy or to be rejected, the turnaround is must faster. Agents also have a better idea of which publishers may be interested in said work, whereas submitting to publishers directly is pretty hit-and-miss. For UK literary agencies dealing with SFF, try this list: http://www.chronicles-network.com/fo...d-fantasy.html

Re: My book falls between genres Hi Parmenion, thanks for the advice. I tried to PM you but the system wont let me...ACCESS DENIED!!...I have no clue why. Maybe can you PM me or email me, I will try again later just in case there is a blip in the system. Hi Brian, thanks for the link, I will check them out. How hard is it to find a good agent though? Most peeps I know have kind of been let down by their agents so I'm not so optimistic.
