Hallelujah - Appreciation Thread

In my near worthless opinion , I consider this to be the greatest song lyric ever wrote. Leonard Cohen was a genius lyricist but sadly sang the worst version of this song.

Most people say that the Jeff Buckley version is the best. Some even think that Jeff Buckley wrote it.

Others say they love Rufus Wainwright's version.

I prefer KD Lang's version or indeed Sheryl Crow's version.

Imogen Heap's version is even more depressing than Buckley's.

Bob Dylan's version is actualy worse than Cohen's. Christ the man failed with this winner.

I have about 15 versions of this song. I want more versions. Please contact me if you have a version that I do not have, or to tell me of a version that is good.

I like Leonard Cohen's version - I think I'm the only one...

I also like Rufus Wainwright's one from the Shrek soundtrack (it's the place I heard it - don't shoot the messenger)

I just looked this song up for you on Google and Wikipedia has this...

I'm not a fan of Buckley, my partner and my mum are, but he's really not my thing.

Buckley's version was the saddest thing I ever heard/saw (I have a DVD) until I saw the video for Hurt by Johnny Cash. This is also a cover. Toward the end of the video June Carter (Cash) is crying behind him. Broke my heart to see a man so angry with his impending death. Sadly she died before him, which was unexpected as he had suffered illness for a long time. For me theri romance was the greatest ever recorded. I shall make a Johnny Cash appreciation thread next.

Here is a link to stream the Hurt video:

Sadness.

Jeff Buckley's version is amazing. I've not heard KD Lang's or Sheryl Cack's, but I find it hard to believe they could be better.

Wainwright was the first one I heard. It pales in comparison. Cohen was equally cursed and blessed. His version is like painting the Mona Lisa, and then spraying faeces on it.

I will check that Cash link out.. I liked Walk The Line but I'm not much of a fan of his music.

Aye he makes Nine Inch Nails 'Hurt' sound beautiful. Cash is a difficult man to like, but once you discover that appreciation you sharp realise how good he was. His covers of this ong and U2's One just blow me away. Cash was dying when he sang these songs.

Wainwright - it was the first version I heard, and the natural quality of the song shone through. It's not the best version imo.

I believe that I heard Cohen's version first, though only discovered an appreciation for the song when I heard Buckley's version. When I first watched Shrek I did not even think it was the same song. Well not at first.

Sheryl Crow's version sounds the best but I am still torn between Lang and Buckley. Their versions have that quirky coolness that I always love.

My favorite version is by Canadian singer Allison Crowe. Click the link and scroll down to the "Tidings" album. She's an up and coming artist, so you can download all tracks legally for free.

i totally agree it made me feel so sad, a real teary moment. a great song though, so brutally emotional, and his voice is so fitting for that song ; rough and aged and completely unadulterated.

Lace, get online, I never got those songs off you

I am just listening to Buckley's version, and I think I was daft to leave it off my top 5 songs list. Oh well.

I saw the Johnny Cash "Hurt" video last night as part of E4's 100 greatest video thing. It was moving, but didn't really touch me that much. I am not a huge fan of Cash, though I can see why some are. His and June's story is a fairy tale, though.

For those who are interested, the number one video on the countdown was Thriller, which annoyed me. It was an important video, but it wasn't the best. It's like when people vote Star Wars as the best film ever (or Imagine as the best song). Best franchise maybe (and still debatable), but best film? Pfft. Some people have no imagination.

I think out of the top 20, Radiohead's "No surprises" was my favourite. It was beaten by Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time", which kind of devalued the whole thing.

EDIT - now listening to Brian Eno's The Big Ship, which is the theme tune to the Power of Nightmares documentaries, and a million other things. Wonderful tune. It builds and it moves.

I imagine that the reason Thriller keeps getting all those accolades is that it was different than anything that had been done before in the medium, it wasn't "just" music, and it was long. Now, while I find that video interesting in a number of ways, I don't think it's the "best" by any means. I wouldn't like to name a "best" video, in any case. There are so many different kinds that are really completely different kettles of fish and can't really be compared with one another.

But I do have to say, since it has been mentioned, that the video for Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is simply one of the most moving things I've ever seen.

Another vote for Allison Crowe's version, which is very powerful. My favourite though is John Cale's, who actually sang the song in Shrek. Rufus Wainwright's version was on the soundtrack only.
