I love picking up new speech patterns. I think Scottish accents are kind of raw sounding, but in a cool way. I love the broad southern US accents too. It smacks of "olde worlde" to me. I can't stand the nasal drawling that passes for speech in Australia...but then I have to hear it everyday. You don't notice how nasal it is until you go overseas and someone asks where you're from and you hear your friend saying "Stroiya" and realise it in NO WAY resembles the word Australia... I do love some of the quaint old expressions though, which I think would rival some of the more colourful phrases on Firefly. Stone the flamin' crows! Drier than a dead dingo's donger Flat out, like a lizard drinking Better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick Full as a goog He's got 'roos loose in the top paddock! To give some examples Also, the original "poem" sounds like something by William Carlos Williams! Last edited by Loner; 2nd October 2006 at 05:44 AM. | |

| Re: Firefly "found" poems "Better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick" is something I've heard my relatives say here in California. I wonder if it's an old saying that crossed the ocean in two directions (to Australia and to the U.S.)? Or did it drift over here from Australia? And it does sound like something on Firefly! |

| Re: Firefly "found" poems I think it's just a saying that is so old, it probably came to both our countries with the European pioneers. What about "Mad as a cut snake" ? Have you heard that one? I think that's an original Aussie saying and it sounds quite Browncoaty to me. Eg. "Don't listen to her. She's mad as a cut snake!" |

| Re: Firefly "found" poems Well, if you cut a snake, of course it gets mad! (No snakes were harmed to prove this proverb)Now I feel like creating Firefly Haiku... Jayne strokes his Vera "Ain't no time for niceties", he writes home to Mom Kaylee loves engines Pistons thrusting, slickly oiled... Why can't men be as simple? Oh dear I seem to be ... smutty... today ![]() |
