Do you have to publish within your own country?

Hi!

I'm still a bit new to this board (and by that I mean green as grass :P), but I'd like to ask a quick question about getting your work published.

I live in Australia, and am currently in the midst of writing my first novel (very exciting, its Sci-Fi). I have heard that publishing in Australia and New Zealand makes it very difficult to get your name on the shelf, as most well known brands come from America or the UK. I was hoping to publish in the UK (the idea of publishing in the home of english literature appeals to me in a poetic kind of way), and I was wondering if I had to be a UK citizen or live in the UK to be able to do this? What limitations are there on publishing here/overseas and where is the best place to publish a Sci Fi novel?

Nope. Several UK SF writers were first published in the US, like Ian McDonald.

If you think about all the international best sellers by authors like J. K. Rowling and Dan Brown, you'll realize that this is not a problem you need to worry about.
