What happened?

Just recently joined this forum, and book club sounded interesting but... it doesn't look like anyone has posted in months. What happened?

Re: What happened?

There was a general lack of interest. In fact, since it has been shut down, yours is the first inquiry...

Re: What happened?

Only if there were enough people who were not merely interested in the idea but actually interested in reading whichever book was chosen.

The problem was that we would vote for a book, one would win, and then only a couple of people would join in the discussion. Sometimes people who voted for a book wouldn't even take part in the discussion. Sometimes the person who suggested the book.

It may be that book clubs work best where people aren't already finding plenty of books to read and talk about. It may be that people with big piles of unread books or long lists of books they want to buy are not so likely to pick up something else just for the sake of a discussion.

Unfortunate, because some of us really liked the idea of a book club.

Re: What happened?

How 'bout a short story club? That way, people will be able to read them in a short period of time and then partake in the discussion.

There are pleny of free short stories to access, and I'm sure many people have anthologies of their own.

This is too good of an oppertunity to pass up!

Re: What happened?

Hey who you talking about!.....

Not sure what the best solution to this issue is really, as the book club is a great idea.

Re: What happened?

My local book store has a really crappy selection and I've read most of what they keep in stock, so would they be rather mainstream books?

Re: What happened?

As long as I can find the book, and have the money for it, I'm interested too.

Re: What happened?

I think this thread pretty much demonstrates why the Book Club didn't work. Of the ten people who have posted in this thread, two have disappeared from the site, a few didn't participate regularly in the Book Club when it was up and running, one says "how about short stories instead," and another only wants fairly "mainstream" books, which I take to mean books so popular they are already being discussed elsewhere on the site, which as we have seen in the past usually means that people regard any Book Club discussion of the same book as redundant and ignore it.

People love the idea, but that doesn't always translate into active participation. Especially after a book is chosen, and they suddenly realize they have a whole pile of books they want to read first.

Why don't we await the arrival of sum totally new Authors have a vote on which to read, all rush out buy her/his/shim's book, then read it and start an entirley new thread regarding this suddenly semi-famous author (thanks to us) and deride, compliment, pick at, the entire thing. . . it would be fresh material in all ways for all??

Re: What happened?

We tried that idea, too, Memnoch, and it was a complete failure.
