Best Female Singer?

I tried looking around, but I couldn't find anything so I'm taking it upon myself to create the "Best Male Singer" topic's counterpart.

So, who do you think has a killer set of pipes? After a bit of thought, I find that I have to go with Liv Kristine for having a very pleasant voice and Dawn Desiree for having what I consider a more original sound.

Yes, the links are both to provide samples and shamelessly promote them in the process.

So, who else do you guys think deserves mention for having an awesome voice? It doesn't matter if they're new, old, popular, or virtually unheard of--list 'em here!

I just know this is going to be the popular favourite.

Celine Dion.

Say what you will about her songs, the girl can nail the notes.

Also I love Annie Lennox.

I'm a huge fan of Sass Jordan... I love her album 'Rats', which was co-written with the incredible gutarist, Stevie Salas... brilliant songs.

Re: Best Female Singer?

This one is a hard one to nail down, but I'd throw in Tori Amos for lyrical content, but for actual vocal talent Amy Lee from Evanescence.

For vocal quality, I like Michelle Shocked but for a voice with sheer charisma I'm a sucker for Suzanne Vega

Beth Gibbons, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush and Patti Smith for me. I dont have a lot of female vocalists in my music collection, dont know why.

Re: Best Female Singer?

Annie Lennox has a lovely voice Paige, I like quite a lot of her stuff!

I also like Kate Bush and Suzanne Vega.

Women who can sing?

Well, I'd have to say Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin (she's a given), Mama Cass, Marlena Shaw, Nina Simone, Joss Stone, Beth Orton, Emmy-Lou Harris, Dolly Parton (you may laugh), Sky from Morcheeba, Sia from Zero 7 ....

There are loads more and yes, Celine can sing, and bloody well, but I wish she'd stop !!!!

xx

Reba McEntire or Christina Aguilera; these two are the best female sings that I know of. They each have good or great ranges and they have many different styles.

Re: Best Female Singer?

I'm kind of disappointed. No one has mentioned Janis Joplin yet. She was one of a kind.

And, in a whole different genre, Barbra Streisand.

Streisand has this great purity of voice, while Janis had such passion.

Today, Amy Lee.
Yesterday, Etta James.

Re: Best Female Singer?

Don't think twice about this - Dinah Washington.

She left a legacy of songs that is incomparable.

If you haven't heard the lady sing, get hold of any of her albums containing 'September In The Rain' - you'll never listen to another female singing voice again without comparing it to Dinah's and finding it wanting.

My partner really wanted me to put Janis Joplin but I'm not a fan so I refrained! You are by no means alone LMA!
