Re: Best Female Singer? Ahh, Telperaca I see by your age you have missed out on some of the most important and influencial musical history of our time. Let me fill you in; you see long, long ago there was a type of music which grew out of the sixties psychadelic rock genre. With few exceptions it was bland, souless and overly commercial and virtually unlistenable. We call this movement today 70's rock. The natural reaction to such dreary pop crap was PUNK! One of the early founders of this dramatically new format which challenged everything music and its industry thought it knew was a group called the Sugar Cubes from Iceland. The lead singer of that band was a small, timid looking brunette with the vocal cords of a lioness in heat, aka BJORK. Check her out.

Re: Best Female Singer? Still the biggest selling female artist. Doesn't matter if anyone else is buying it, she has a huge fan base that would buy anything she released. A least most of her song are original unlike a few others!

Re: Best Female Singer? Don't get offended by this post - I'm just expressing my honest opinion. I think she's mainly out there for the money and the fame, comared to the actual pleasure of being out there on stage and entertaining. But then, if you really think about it, 99.99% of the stuff out there is being released for money, rather than purely for joy. "Charts this and charts that".

Re: Best Female Singer? Maybe I can stop you two from arguing by uniting you against a common enemy - me. I think Kate Bush has the most amazing voice, vocal range and creative musical ideas. It's true, she does not cater to the tastes of popular culture, but she shaped and inspired a whole generation of musicians.

Re: Best Female Singer? First off, just because Madonna sells a lot of records doesn't mean that she's any good. The Sun sells a lot of newspapers, for example. Anything massly popular inevitably means that it attracts people who are attracted like sheep to anything that is massly popular. There are far more interesting, unusual, and experimental acts out there that deserve your attention. Madonna was groundbreaking in her time, but I think she's lost it now. (No offence to anyone who likes her, this is just my opinion of course). Secondly, I agree that Bjork is fantastic; but where did this "The Sugarcubes were amongst the early founders of punk" come from?! They were formed in 1986! Punk was in 1976! If you want to broaden your horizons with some wonderful female singers from the punk period, then I'd suggest Poly Styrene (X-Ray Spex), Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie and the Banshees), and Lene Lovich. I've already mentioned Deborah Harry of course.

I don't know when Sugarcubes were formed, but I do have to say...I saw them in concert once when they were opening for U2 on the Zoo TV tour, and I liked their music. Bjork is a bit of a strange little person (anyone see that swan dress she wore to the Academy Awards one time?), but I like her solo work, as well. |
