What the heck happened with Samwell at the end?

Hi all, brand new here. I've been lurking whilst I trudged through AFFC. Anyway, the ending with Sam confused me. Is he working with the citadel guys now, or was this group something else? Is Pate the kid from the beginning or has somebody else assumed his identity?

Pate is now the Faceless Man: Jaqen Hagar

Who are this faction among the Maesters working for? My guess is that Varys is involved somehow. They will become instrumental when Dany comes a conquering.

Pate is totally the person from the prologue, who is actually Jaqen Hagar.

I was confused by that too, but it appears that Pate is indeed Jaqen as the others have stated. What the ultimate purpose is behind this is unknown and is cause for wild speculation!!

I know the imposter has the ability to change his appearance and took over Pate's identity, but how do you know it is specifically Jaqen?

Someone told me once, it has to do with his description....possibly the scar? If you search for it on the ASOIAF forums there are threads devoted to the subject. Ill try to get a link...

It is not one hundred percent positive it is Jaqen, but 99.999999%!

The only other possibility is that it is another faceless man or whatever, but my money is on Jaqen

Sam is joining the Maesters of Oldtown so he can become one and 'graduate'.
I think you needed the sponsorship of a Maester to join, hence Maester Aemon accompaning him. Plus I think Aemon wanted access to Oldtown's massive archive so he could investigate the various prophecies. That, I think, will now fall to Sam. What the faceless man is doing there is anyone's guess although I found it quite interesting, even in the short time there, to see the political machinations going on in Oldtown.

They'll either end up working together or against each other. If the Faceless Man has been hired by Varys or Illyrio, I'm going to guess that he'll be investigating the same prophecies.
