Re: Harry Potter getting darker?

I expect there will be a new series of Potter films somewhere in the future. Someday a Peter Jackson-like person will look at the films, say "wow, these are bad" and make his own version.

as do we all. I hope Jo manages to provide a satisfactory ending which won't require a 15 or more certificate at the cinema. Poor kids wouldn't be allowed to finish their fix for a few years

Hehe, yeah.. would be funny. I think things like the ending, though, would be scenes that a film could pull of quite well, as opposed to trying to recreate the plot, and fit everything in. With all the special effects, I'm willing to bet the ending of the 6th movie would be pretty good. That's following the logic that there will be a huge fight, of course.

That won't be a problem. The rating for GoF (2005) was PG-13. If the 7th movie comes out in 2008, a 15 rating wouldn't be a problem, as the children who were allowed to GoF in 2005 will be at least 16 in 2008.

That would be great if that happens... I really don't care for the last two movies.

P.S.- last I heard movies 5, 6 and 7 will be released within a few months of each other with 5 being released around christmas, and book 6 next summer and 7 which is about to begin filming next christmas at least that is what is currently up

Ah, but the 11 year olds who saw it will not be. Nor will the 8 year olds who have only just started the series. Over here I think it's a 12A, which means anyone can see it with a parent. There may be people who have not yet even read the books, seen the films, who will want to by 2008 and not be 15 :P

Well, I strongly believe books should not be "softened" just so they'll be suitable for a younger audience. The 8-year-olds who just started will just have to wait a few years until they're old enough for the darker books in the series (read: TOotP and onwards). You can't be serious in saying that JKR will have to come up with a very happy ending just so 8yo's can see the movie?

Besides, if there were 11-year-olds who saw the movie, they were accompanied by a parent (PG-13 means anyone under 13 must have a parent with him/her). So it shouldn't be much of a problem for that parent to go with them to the 7th movie if it has a similar rating. Children with unwilling parents can't have legally seen it if they weren't 13.

Well the thing is here in the US at least if it is not R theaters do not check IDs or require kids to have their parents with them for PG-13... actually they rarerly do it even for R movies so those kids can still go and see the movies

OK, so they could, but they "officially" weren't allowed to. So they really don't have a case if they're angry if the 7th movie has a high rating.

It's like illegally buying a gun on the street and then complaining with the authorities because you're not allowed to use it.

Re: Harry Potter getting darker?

No, I don't think JK will soften it, I was merely pointing out that there are bound to be some people who will be miffed if it turns out to be a high rating.

However, I think over here the likely rating will be 12A, or PG13 over in the States - as the most recent ones have been (i think?) Certainly no higher than that. No matter what happens in the book or movie, I don't think there is reason to go higher than that. 8 year olds are tougher than they look :P

But this whole chat raises an interesting point, does it not? Say the 7th movie is a 15. There are bound to be many, many who are younger that will have read the 7th book. They have already witnessed these events that now, in the movie, they are not allowed to see. And surely in a book, such events can be a lot worse than what is depicted on the cinema screen: imaginations can be far more detailed.

That's true, but actually seeing a blood-covered corpse (just picking a random example) on screen is probably much more frightening for kids than reading "his dead body was covered in blood".

Aye.. you can imagine it to be far worse than what a film can show.

Re: Harry Potter getting darker?

I have sometimes been able to foresee the plot twists coming in well written stories. I get beat up by my family when I say it out loud before the actual story gets there, so I'll refrain. But to quote "we see through a glass darkly". So hang in there and be prepared for the twist to end all twists. 7 will at one time redeem the whole of the series, amaze and astound, while at the same time renew your faith in youth and innocence. No. I don't have any insider knowledge other than I have followed the previous installments in both book and movie form.

If J.K. doesn't pull it off, or if she does but another way, well, the series will still rank high IMHO.
