He said that he hated it when people complained about there being no good music/bands any more. There is plenty of fantastic stuff out there, you just have to go and find it rather than letting it come to you. The charts are a forgetable wasteland, but there are places other than the charts, especially with the internet, where you can find it. At the time I was, like you, stuck in another era. I just listened to the same stuff I'd been listening too when I was a student and hanging on to the bands from my personal golden age. Because everything else I heard was crap I just assumed all current music sucked and just lived in the past. I think a big part of it was when I was at university I was constantly exposed to new music through concerts and friends. When I was working this dropped away and the only exposure to music I had was my own collection, the radio and TV. Anyway, after hearing this interview I decided to do something about it and actively went out of my way to try and find new music I likes. And I did. I'm really glad I did. Several bands that I know list amongst my favourites come from doing this. I've even expanded my musical tastes a lot through doing this and got back into seeing live music again. For this I owe Nick Hornby a beer if I ever meet him. I guess that's a very long winded way of saying "TRY looking... there are plenty." ![]() | |

Re: Doesn't it Sh*T you that there isn't any REAL bands out there anymore? Well, this is tricky. See in no small part Voltaire was right: whatever is to stupid to be siad is sung. You got three, maybe five verses and they have to rhyme. What can you REALLY do with it? If you want message music, look no further than White Power music. And I may not be the one to talk because I listen to top 40s, not because I like the pop all that much, but because the low quality is better than the no-quality I heard elsewhere. G-Unit's "My Buddy" is awsome though. Sh**, I love Depsche Mode. I wanna go to concert and scream my head off while they play 'Everything Counts.' I have no idea what it's about, but it's cool. But I also really like Ace of Base, and I can hear your groans already. But sometimes there are really good songs like "The Ballad of the Alamo" by Johny Horton or 'The Message' by Furious Five. If all rap were like the latter, well, I'd certainly give the genre more respect. How do you respect a man like Tupac? Or 50 Cent? I can just see the chuckles at Stormfront, going SEE! SEE! WE WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG! 88 WHITE POWER! Last edited by dwndrgn; 30th August 2006 at 04:05 PM.

Re: Doesn't it Sh*T you that there isn't any REAL bands out there anymore? Try The Libertines and the album Youth and Young Manhood by The Kings of Leon . You should also check out the Drive By Truckers if you dig southern rock. But 99.9% of contemporary bands are utter sh*t. Modern mainstream rap sucks, as does rock. It's sad indeed.

Re: Doesn't it Sh*T you that there isn't any REAL bands out there anymore? To my mind, music is subjective not objective. There is no universal gauge as to what is 'good' music, only the way the individual reacts to it. I'd also like to know how 'real'ness is being defined here, it has different relevance and meaning for different people. Another point, being worried about the band's own personality (realness) or lack thereof, and then complaining about how shallow most music is and how it is mostly based on 'coolness' factors rather than the music itself, is basically saying one thing then turning back on oneself and saying the opposite. The above is a general response to the thread, rather than anyone in particular. Thread starter: What types of things do you like about Led Zeppelin and their sound?

Re: Doesn't it Sh*T you that there isn't any REAL bands out there anymore? As an aging and disgruntled metal-head, I agree that modern music is for the dogs. The use of instruments has fallen by the wayside. It's all boy bands, and rappers, and Britney Spears clones. The only people who perform real rock and roll, and play real instruments, are the archaic legends like Metallica and Aerosmith, and maybe a few other exceptions. I can count the CDs I've bought in the past decade on a one hand.

Re: Doesn't it Sh*T you that there isn't any REAL bands out there anymore? I dunno.. Led Zepplin had arguably the best bassist, guitarist, drummer and singer in the history of all modern music.. And they were atrocious!! Now ill admit, most modern music is atonal acoustic souless sludge but there are so many billions of unsigned bands about that you can eventually find the flower within the pot of dirt. xxx
