Serenity Set about six months after the last events seen on the TV show. Whedon says, "The movie is bigger, more epic than anything you can do in a series."

I agree ... movie, TV, DVD, even the Sci-Fi channel, I just want there to be more. I spent a week recently watching DVDs of the show and then the film and I now have severe withdrawal symptoms!

Re: DVD's better than nothing

The only way for a sequel to become a reality is for Whedon and Sci-Fi Channel to get together and release the sequel as a tv movie, or a direct-to-DVD release. Its title would be: "Serenity 2: Armed and Fabulous!". But thats if Sci-Fi Channel wanted to do it. They would have to contact the studio to get the option, and if the studio said 'yes' - which they would, assuming the Sci-Fi Channel agreed to pay for it, then they'd contact Whedon, and if he said 'yes', provided he or the people he trusts are in control of it, the it'd be a greenlight. Simple as that. All it takes is money and a will to do it, but the lackluster performance of the movie has pretty much hurt its chances.

Nonetheless, Whedon has repeatedly stated that he intends to revist the Firefly/Serenity universe eventually, but I doubt he's going to do it with these characters. Well, at least not as central to the story, anyway. I could envision a spinoff series taking place 10 or 15 years after the events of Firefly/Serenity. The story would focuse on one faction of the Alliance who are fed up with their rules, regulations, and polices and decide to oppose them. As a result, an Alliance civil war ensues. It would focuse on the point-of-view of these former/rebel Alliance troopers, possibly featuring one or two characters from the original series. Personally, think this is the most feasible option because if the Sci-Fi Channel creates a tv spinoff, they will automatically owned the rights, not Fox.

You'll still have the problem of Joss Whedon though, Whitestar.
He's pretty much ruled out any possibility of returning to a TV series format so unless he signs over the rights for someone else to create a spinoff series I'm not sure it'll get off the ground. Plus by doing that we'll lose Mal and all those other great characters. Unlike the original ST which you could argue that by the third series it had shot it's bolt, there was still a lot left over for Firefly left to do in my opinon.

Re: Cast Signed Up For Sequels

About the possibility of a series with new characters sometime in the future: I want to see more of Mal and the characters we've come to know. Right now. Sure, Whedon would do a wonderful job with new characters (he's a genius, after all), and I bet I'd fall in love with them just as I fell in love with the Serenity crew . . . but I'm too darned curious about what happens next to Mal's bunch (who are, after all, too damn pretty to die).

Last I heard he hadn't done that... he said that it was a possibility as a TV movie. The only thing I heard him ruling out was the orginal series coming back like nothing happened...

Agreed there's still many untold stories and as Carrie pointed out, Whedon has firmly stated that there's no way in hell he's going back to tv, at least, not with Firefly/Serenity. A tv movie or a tv mini-series is the only viable option, but again, that will only happen if the Sci-Fi Channel would be willing to collaborate with Whedon and dish out the green bags.
