Re: What will you not read?

Well I won't read Westerns or Romance. In fantasy I'm not not that intrested in comedy ala Terry Pratchett, only in smaller witty doses as part of the dialogue. Having said that I have enjoyed some comedy pieces ala The Enchanter series by Pratt and De Camp.

I am however a sucker for the doorstop EPIC hence my like of GRRM, Erikson etc..

I will not read...the rest of LoTR after Fellowship, which had my brains trying to slither out through my ears to escape the exquisite torture of an excruciatingly detailed account of the adventures of one of the most boring set of characters I've come across in a majorly acclaimed work.

Re: What will you not read?

I refuse to read most things that are labelled 'Literature', especially if it has just recently been released. To Kill A Mockingbird is literature. The Catcher in the Rye is literature. I have seen Bridget Jones's Diary in the literature section of some bookstores. Not. Literature.

As I survived the experience twice, I can't agree. But I just love the metaphors you uses Ravenus.

That reminds me of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. We were assigned that book in a high school English class. And it was fine. Until I got to the part where he takes three pages...three pages...to describe a turtle crossing a road. I threw the book across the room and refused to read any further. And when my teacher asked me why I hadn't finished the book, I told her exactly why. But she just didn't get it.

I don't think I've ever tried to read any of Steinbeck's fiction again. Although I really liked his travel book, Travels With Charley, and I read one of his published journals, written during the time he was writing East of Eden. That was quite good as well.

Re: What will you not read?

Try Tortilla Flat, no long description, clever writing, the style is really different than The Grapes of Wrath.

OR Cannery Row, which is very similar to Tortilla Flat but a bit inferior. Reading both you get an immense deja vu and connected to the prologue of Log from the Sea of Cortez, his very interesting log of an expedition he undertook.

Re: What will you not read?

I am the same nemisis I refuse to read romance or to watch it on tv, it annoys me!

I will also not read trashy girly novels.

Also the self help books that promise people 'miricle' weight loss, easy solutions to thier problems and so on.

I second those.

Rarely do I read general fiction. I don't really care if the average joe is having drugs problems or whatnot. S.E. Hinton was about the only author who could interest me in 'gangs' and so on.

Cannery Row? Inferior? No way! It's one of the greatest books ever written! Second only to Watership Down!

I've read Tortilla Flat too, and it was great as well, but not nearly as emotional and beautiful as Cannery Row.

Re: What will you not read?

Two that i recall,...Crime and Punishment and Madame Bovary?...Flaubert and Tolstoy?.

Both probably because they are for me,too good.

C&P-too depressing...only got about 20/30 pages into it..not 1 spark of hope, all the characters/hopes/expectations/situations etc are so painfully accurate..that i had to put it down or reach for the Vodka.

MB-too boring..was nearly half way before i realised i was excited by the opening of a door or the distant sight of a human from a window.

Tortilla Flat is good. I haven't read it, really, but my English teacher in the 8th grade read it to us in class, so I've heard it. And while I haven't read Cannery Row, ravenus, I've seen the film and I suspect that I would like the book. I'll have to add both to my to-read list.

Oh, and lazygun...It was the funniest thing about Madame Bovary. I had to read it for a class one time. I hated reading it. Grumbled through the whole thing. My literature teacher thought I was insane (for many reasons, but my constant complaining about MB was one of them). And then, once I had finished it, I thought it was good. Not that I'd read it again, but I'm glad I did go ahead and read it.

What he said. And, after hating them when forced to read them at school, "classics" - Hardy, Jane Austen, all that
