BBC Worldwide have officially announced today the opening of a new Doctor Who exhibition on Brighton pier, which will feature original props and costumes, designs and video clips from the new series. The exhibition will open on Saturday 14th May, and stay open throughout the summer season with tickets priced £5 (Adults) and £3 (Children).

Martin Wilkie, head of design for the exhibition says, "It is a fantastic opportunity to bring this exciting new exhibition to one of Britain's best known attractions."

"We have been given unprecedented access by BBC Wales' production team to Doctor Who props, models, costumes and, most importantly, the monsters. This will be an unrivalled collection of new material and is presented in a way that will ensure it is a memorable experience for all.”

"With over 10 million viewers tuning into the first few episodes on BBC ONE, and with major critical acclaim, the programme is a huge hit. And this exhibition will allow people to get as close to the real thing as they dare!"

Vistors will be able to see the new Dalek up close for the first time, as well as the Moxx of Balhoon, everybody's favourite 'blue meanie'; the awesome Slitheen; Jabe and fellow guests from Platform 1; and the Autons, together with their Lair.

Along with these, there will be many other exhibits including a model of Big Ben and even a Space Pig! Plus there are videos, design drawings, costumes and props, as well as a life-size replica of the TARDIS itself. The exhibition is definitely bigger on the inside!
My kids have asked me to take them to this. Has anyone else been?

I'll give you a review after we've been, but this BBC clip and review doesn't make it look that exciting:

Thumbs up

We went to this yesterday and I give it a conditional thumbs up.

There is an option of a family ticket (£12) 2 adults and 2 children which is not mentioned.

To begin with there is a small exhibition on each of the previous eight Doctors with a full size Cyberman, Ice Warrior, Haemovore and (I've forgotten the fourth monster), that light up behind a screen when you press a button. There are several videos running showing different items.

Then there is a perspex TARDIS with the original costumes of Rose and the Doctor inside. The advertising promo claims that you can actually touch the TARDIS, but since this is the only TARDIS on show and it doesn't look anything like the real thing, we were disappointed by that part.

There are some art department models and sketches, but at this point I was wondering if it would get much better.

Turn a corner and the main part of the exhibition begins. There is a section on each of the new episodes shown so far, with original props, cotumes, scenery and monsters from each.

In the Autons section, there are Autons in suits and some bursting out of a shop window in wedding dresses. There is the actual wheelie bin which swallowed Mickey and the original storyboards of the bin-munching sequence.

There are information boards up in every room, explaining how the programme-makers combined models with CGI to make the monsters look as real as possible.

After the Auton section, comes a Platform 1 section, Gelf section, a Slitheen section and an impressive array of three Daleks. There is a new gold Dalek, one with the front removed to reveal the mutant, and a very ancient original one. These models and props were very interesting. The alien 'pig' is on show, and the Big Ben clocktower model, and Mickey's plastic head, and Sneeds mortuary, Jabe and the trees, the Moxx of Balhoon, the Face of Boe and Lady Cassandra.

My daughter took some photos with her mobile phone that came out well, but I can't work out how to easily put them up here. This website has some photos that are probably better than ours:

The sign at the end says to watch this space as more items will be added as the series continues, though there doesn't seem to be room for more as that was the end, and then through the gate to the obligatory shop!

The shop is of course overpriced with DVDs for £19.95 that are £11.99 in Sainsburys. I did get a Dalek book for 95p though, so there are so at least one bargin.
