Forgive the title, but it was the working title for the first Doctor Who story and it saves confusion with Unearthly Child, the first episode (aired or unaired).

The end of Unearthly Child had the Tardis materialise in a desert. Here the local cavemen have a problem- It is cold and they have lost the art of fire.
A caveman spots the Doctor lighting his pipe, decides that he can be of help and kidnaps him.
The Doctor finds he cannot oblige, having dropped his matches during the kidnaping and is about to be sacrificed, when his companions turn up.
The story becomes something of a powerplay between two would be caveman leaders, Kal and Za, while our heroes attempt to escape.

While Unearthly Child had twentieth century man in the primitive camp. The remaining episodes firmly turned the tables as they Ian and Barbara tried to reason their problems like civilised people and finding it doesn't work with cavemen either!

By no means a bad story, it doesn't quite live up to the standard offered by the first episode.

Better than the film 'Quest for Fire', but then, that isn't really saying much!

I just watched this for the first time in 42 years! To tell the truth, all I remembered was the title sequence and the music.

I wonder if they were trying to push the 'educational' aspect of the series with the first story (Doctor Who came from the BBC Education budget) ; Looking at the society of the Caveman and modern man?

Other stories looked at all sorts of Earth history and even won some acclaim for its accuracy.

Not sure if it ever worked as a learning show, but kids always knew a good thing when they saw it.
