Re: Shannara Series

Love the Shannara series. Terry Brooks was my Favorit author for a long time, he still might be but now I really have a hard time picking a fave. The whole series is great but I think that the first two series were the best. In fact my favorit one(I can pick books, but not authors :-P) is the Elfstones of Shannara.
A lot of people say that Brooks is now just milking the series and pumping out the books mass production style. I guess I can understand that, I did't feel that his last books were quite on par with his first. But they were still pretty good, and his new series "High Druid of Shannara" is turning out to be very interesting.

Re: Shannara Series

I read most of them. I've been hoping between all the seires at the same time. I really liked Magic Kingdom for sale-Sold!. I also thought it to be amusing. I just went out and bought the second book , the black unicorn or something just the other day. Hope it's as good as the first.

Re: Shannara Series

I Love the Shannara series. I particularly enjoyed the Heritage. ONe thing that always gets me is the history of it all. I was reading the voyages of the Jerle Shannara - and it was just really neat, because they were referring to Wren Ellesindil(sp? its been a while ) with coplete reverence. Yet i remember reading about her when she was nobody. And Allanon was just a vague memory for most. Yet, i had read all about them. In the Jerle Shannara - i don't think anyone even remembered that first battle with the dark lord. And what about Shea and Flick Ohmsford. They're not even a memory. Theres a vague sense of pride if thats the word, its like - i was there.
-shrug- i wonder if anyone else has any idea what im talking about.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. It is almost like you have friends who've been immortalized in print...even thought they were print to begin with

Thumbs up Re: Shannara Series

The Shannara Series, is what got me interested in fantasy and in reading and writing! I wish that I could tell all of this to Terry Brooks! Because he is the one who inspired me and gave me the drive that I needed to become exited about these things! I want to shake his hand!

Re: Shannara Series

I've read all of the Shannaras over the years, loved them. I've just started what I guess is the last series within the series...the Voyage of Jerle Shannara? I'm on the first book, The Isle Witch. It's strange, because it's jumped forward in time a bit. While there are still the four lands and whatnot, they now have flying machines. It kind of messes with your head, but it's done in a cool, 'medieval Starwars' type Brooks fashion.

I think he's great. He's one of those writers, that when I start getting full of myself, I read him and go..........damn. I suck!

Does anyone else think the older ones are better than the new additions to the series.

Re: Shannara Series

Depends; I really enjoyed the four books in the Scions of Shannara series. But I've been trying to get through the Isle Witch for a while now, and it's kind of a struggle, just not that exciting.

I think my favorite one was the one with the tree, when the forbidding broke down and all the demons came through.....Elfstones of Shannara was it?

I also found the Isle Witch trilogy slow going, and not as exciting as the others. I think Brooks was more daring with the other books and you knew perhaps a character would die. I didnt get that feeling at all with the Isle Witch, even though a character did die.

Re: Shannara Series

Sorry to say, but I will never read anything by Brooks after getting a quarter of the way into the 1st Shannara and realising what a rip off of Tolkien he is. For those fans who want to decapitate me, just remember everyone is entitled to their own opinion (but mine happens to be right...)

Heh! Welcome to Chronicles, Ashen Shugar. With an attitude like that you ought to do just fine in here. I'm informed we specialise in healthy mutual disrespect...
