Hamster? I had one once...Started out being Heidi (gotten from my neighbor's; theirs had babies) but then Heidi...grew himself a pair and became Homer....the sweetest hamster I've ever known...never bit anyone, bonded with my bird...they would sit together for over an hour, gently touching each other with beak and nose and making little noises at each other...
another cutie like these two and your "tough guy" persona will be in the hopper!

I don't currently own any pets, although so far I've had a grand total of 18 cats, 3 rabbits, 2 turtles, and a stick insect called bob.
