Question Just a little one

Can anybody tell me why, on the badge that's shown just before the ad-breaks, at the bottom, it says 'BSG75'?

Just a thought,

Rik

I can offer two reasons:-

1/ It is a nod to the date of the original BG series 1975

2/ It is the ships registration number, like HMS Manchester is D91 in the Royal Navy. The original Battlestar Galactica was also the BSG75

The problem with it being a ship class code such as D91 is that the D stands for Destroyer, just like F is a Frigate, PTboats are Patrol Torpedeo Boats and U-boats are Unterseeboots.

Therefore, if it stood for "Battlestar" class shouldn't it be B75 or BS75, but not include it's name "Galactica" as the G?

And it it were a title such as SS, USS, HMS or HIJMS, then it should be "BS Galactica" and not include a number?

Looking at the US Navy, where they take more notice of such things than we do, if only because they have more of them. They carry a three letter class designation with their numbering to cover the ships function, thus they do not have a simple destroyer, they have:
DDG- Destroyer air Defence Guided
SSN- Submarine Strike Nuclear
CVN- Carrier aViation Nuclear
FFG- Frigate Guided (submarine)
etc.

BSG would translate to Battle Star Galactic class, or something just as profane in their own version of french/latin.

As an aside aircraft carriers are numbered using an R so they cannot be confused with cruisers

I guess you are right about the class codes Ray, and if 'Galactica' was the very first of the 'Battlestar' class of ships, then they could well be all 'Battlestar Galactica' class ships.

Only that I didn't get the impression in the mini-series that the 'Galactica' itself was all that unusual or special. They seemed to imply that it was not a flagship and that Adama was slightly out of favour, otherwise surely he would have been given a better command on a more modern ship. I thought it was being turned into a museum simply because it was one of the few remaining ships of that class, and also because of it's exploits during the war.

I thought of it a little like the cruiser HMS Belfast that is permanently moored on the south bank of the Thames. When that was built it was nothing special, but it ended up being the last big gun armoured warship of World War II, and then took part in the Korean War. It is only interesting because of it's long history. As compared to something like HMS Warrior at Portsmouth, the first iron-hulled, armoured battleship in the world, that never had to fire a weapon in combat because it's design was so revolutionary.

Re: Just a little one - BSG75

Hey guys&girls. Was just random-googling stuff, and this jumped up. Thought i had to help you a bit, so i registered just because.

Anyway, BSG stands for Battle Star Group, in this case Group nr. 75!

Battlestar groups
are groups of military vessels centered around at least one battlestar, often supported by a number of smaller vessels. Galactica is the "capital ship" of BSG75 and it's commanding officer is William Adama...

Anyways, have fun!
