1.01: Rising (spoilers) Post-Viewing Discussion....therefore beware of Spoilers.... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Better than I was expecting. I liked it a lot better than New Order, actually. A pretty great Series Premiere, had a real feature film quality to it, including the special effects. I found the charecters pretty interesting, other than Sumner who was kind of a jerk, and Becket's accent seems a little over-done. What I didn't like was the Wraith. While their architecture and ships are pretty cool, I don't like they way their costumes and make-up look, and find the way the "queen" acted excruciatingly campy and downright irritating. Hopefully I will adjust, but the enemy seems to be the weak link in the show so far. I also have misgivings about the special effects. They were all great, but there was a lot of them. The whole city is designed to be enchanced via FX. The puddle jumper (I liked "Gateship" better for a name), the gate sheild, the exterior of the city...it all needs to be CGed. If they can afford to be doing so many FX, more power to them, but it might get to the point where it's more obvious than SG-1 (who are pretty obvious) that they are trying to save money on FX (SG-1 always resists showing spaceships and stuff, re-uses the same shots over and over again and only shows a few seconds of CG stuff) if they can't.

Agree with that. Two years after being told at Gatecon that they were upgrading to new film sizes and we should see new and better stuff, I still noticed that the 'Gate activation "swish" from the side was the same one used for eight years and this despite a MALP being parked high on the ramp. Otherwise, this did have the feature film thing going on. Mostly because this was the first real pilot they've had to do. Totally introduce the premise and stuff like that. But I also think they had the other half of the studio building to build the largest set in Vancouver in years. That sure impressed me seeing how they used so many parts of it. That sort of thing does a lot for a TV show's feel. Their money saving might come in being able to fall back on the old SG-1 "exploring" show format. |

| I thought it was very good myself and even interested 2 others who did not particularly like SG-SG1 to watch it at work (well not much got done for those 2 hours ) and they both loved it and said they intended to keep watching so that bodes well for Atlantis imo.p.s. Quote:

I thought the movie was very well done. Seeing the Probe missile really added to the credibility of the Probe missiles. The last time we saw them in SG-1 they looked like funny shaped blobs of energy. The design hasn't changed, but we got to see what the missiles look like when not in use. And well we learned that they were actually missiles. I think the actors all work pretty well in there roles. The Atlantis Set is colossal, but it's easy to understand why. One reason is to justify it being called a city. Another reason is probably because it would be hard to do totally on-world adventures with out having something to explore. SG1 had the whole Earth for on-world adventure. Atlantis just has a huge city. I though the Puddle Jumper is kind of an ugly ship, but I don't hate it. I wonder if in future episodes they will use the other ships because the cloaked is fried on the first ship they used? I half expected the Wraith to be pretty cheesy, but I was wrong. I'm not a huge fan of the way the Wraiths look, but they don't look horrible. There were a lot of good things about this movie. I've seen it twice now and it's still compelling to watch it. The Atlantis city lives up to the in-show (from SG-1) rumors about it.

I really enjoy the premiere, it was interesting and have great humor in it. As for the Wraiths, I have to get use to them. They look interesting and I'm really looking forward to know their background as the series advance. Is a little difficult not to compare them to the goauld's after seen SG1, but I think is very cool. And it looks like they just want to eat not been treated at gods like the goaulds. I really enjoy all the thing with the city, it looks cool. I have to agree with the puddle jumper not being a pretty ship. But one thing I really enjoy, was seeing the ships both the puddle jumper and the wraiths ship coming from the stargate, not the usual appearing in the sky we see in SG1. It was interesting. I'm really looking forward to see more. Krystal ![]()

I must say I was surprised by it all, I personally wasn't looking forward to Atlantis as I thought it wouldn't be anything compared to SG1. I am happy to see I was wrong (so far), I have gone from not being bothered about watching it to thinking I have to long to wait until the next episode. Two things I would have changed if I could and that is. 1) Have Col. Marshall Sumner (the X-Files Guy) as the senior military officer, he seemed to have more of a military feel to him and could have been the Jack O'Neil of Atlantis 2) Leave the military Personnel in their proper military uniforms. the photos on the website show John Sheppard and Aidan Ford in the Atlantis suit all the scientists are wearing. Does anyone know how many viewers watched the premier?

Yeah I liked the spaceship travel through the Stargate aspect too, Krystal. I had read some of the rumor / spoiler info so it didn't totally surprise me. In fact before I saw Atlantic I thought that would be the biggest difference. Now that I've seen it I realize that's only one of many differences that are possible. Sort of related to all of that . . I like the way the Atlantis ships are stored and drop through the ceiling. It's functional and that enhances the believability of the Atlantis city. I already said the Atlantis Set is colossal, but I should have said it's quite beautiful too. There isn't a lot of furniture, but it looks comfortable and inviting too.

does this need spoiler space? :rolly2:  :alienooh: :dead: :kisses:  Anyway, wasn't expecting much of the Atlantis pilot but was pleasantly surprised with what I got. Plot-wise, sorta predictable, but I had fun with it. THe characters are engaging - I like Sheppard quite a bit and McKay has come into his own now that he's not snarking with Sam (but I bet he misses her ).The Wraith reminded me of Marilyn Manson in one of his videos, but on closer examination, I kept thinking of that NYC socialite with more money than brains who had her face altered into a lion type appearance. No joke. She really looks freakish and all they'd have to do is dab on make-up, no prothestics, for her to do a role in SG1 or SGA! I like the uniforms now - and the fact that they may actually be out of uniforms (as in civilian type clothes). So we won't have OD green 24/7. I hope they show more exploration of the base, as it's huge, and maybe they'll go to a planet without fir trees (we can pray). Shame Robert Patrick's character got killed, but then you could see 'red shirt' written on him a mile away ... Elyse

I really enjoyed the premiere, moreso than Stargate actually but I'm not sure if it was just better or if it was because it's a new show. Either way I'll be watching the rest of the season, it definitely got off to a good start. The characters are great, I'm particularly loving Sheppard at the moment, and his interaction with Weir is interesting to watch. I'm hoping they'll flesh out Ford's character a lot more because he's the one I think is the least memorable from the episodes, but they couldn't fit everything into such a short space of time I suppose.

When the location of the Ancients’ Lost City is discovered, a new Stargate team is assembled and embarks on a dangerous mission to the distant Pegasus galaxy. Far from Earth and faced with a menacing new enemy, the team battles to save Atlantis and its former inhabitants from certain destruction.

I've only seen Part 1, so the Wraiths haven't appeared yet (only their ships) but the description of them periodically returning to planets to harvest Humans sounded very Goa'uld like to me. I just wondered whether they should have made the new bad-guys far more different and strange. It struck me that we jumped straight into everything with very little character development -- okay the 'helicopter' and the 'chair' were meant to explore some of the new team -- but I don't really feel as if I know Dr Weir properly yet. Also, they are relying heavily on viewers having seen both the end of SG-1 S7 and start of S8. I expected them to try and attract new viewers and explain the background more. I think they tried to do too much to achieve the cliffhanging ending to part 1. A question: I know it was established that Jack shared Ancient genes that allowed him to access their technology, and know we now see that many Humans also share those genes, but I didn't realise until now that the Ancients looked so like us. (Stargate: Infinity, the cartoon series, has an Ancient that is very different to us indeed with long flowing wings and spikey head.) So has this been established already in Stargate SG-1 and I missed it, or is this the first time? The appearance of the Ancients at the very start of the episode confused me (I didn't understand who they were.) Also, that being the case, am I correct that Teyla's people must be decendents of the Ancients, rather than travellers from our Galaxy (the reason that they look just like us)? That is a continuing problem with the 'Star Trek' universe, but until now has never been one in the 'Stargate' universe because the Goa'uld transplanted humans everywhere in our Galaxy. Just from reading these posts, it appears that Col. Sumner is not a permanent team member. I think that would be a mistake too.
