Conspiracy ? I remember reading at the time of release, that this film was specifically arranged by certain powers that be. The idea was that it was a government propoganda film, designed in such a way, as to create a subconcious impression of aliens. So basically that if we were visited by aliens, we would automatically assume they were here to invade us. Interestingly the government, or more precisely, the military were advising on the film. But when they saw the references to area 51 they demanded the plot (or area 51 references) to be changed. Fortunately the film makers stuck to their guns and the military pulled out from supporting the film. Anyone got any thoughts on this ?

I do not think there is any conspiracy here at all. If aliens appear we will treat them in the way that fts the nation where they arrive:- Americans will shoot at them, they'll get a parking ticket in the UK, the Russians will spirit them away to somewhere dark and cold, and the Chinese will open take-aways. As for military advice- It was about as accurate as films ever are, with or without official help.

If anything, sci fi teaches us possibilities. Films like Independance Day, Day of the Triffids and War of the Worlds where the Aliens are hostile would teach us to work so much harder to make peace with visitors. If anything the respective governemnts and alliances of the world would gain so much from allying with visitors. And besides..... why would they fly ninety billion light years just to pick a fight?
