Tim Powers on writing (with link)

I debated whether to put this here or in the Aspiring Writers board, and then finally decided to put it here because I think it might be of interest to more of us than just the writers among us.

This isn't a new interview. Tim Powers sat for it on January 26, 2001, before a speaking engagement to promote his then-newest novel, "Declare" (a very good book, by the way). In it he talks about, among other things, the boundaries - or lack of them - between genres; doing research; why science fiction and fantasy writers need to read more than just science fiction and fantasy; and his relationship with Phililp K. Dick.

Holly shmokes Littlemissatitude you sure stimulated my mind on this night. "History" well I always thought it was a succession of recorded events wether by word of mouth or in written records but then when it comes to the handing down of historical naratives by word of mouth it would be hard to decide the onthentisity of these oral reports of true past occurances.

Are they just legends or handed down myths that were passed down from generation to generation. The North Amarican natives were suppose to have done the passing of their history in this maner but what do you know, just a few years ago they find Ojibway birchbark pictograph scrolls tucked away in a cave.

But then there could be some basis of truth in some myths.
To many myths and legends croping up in diferent areas of the world that have close analogies to one another to be coincidence. As for the Bibble I always knew that allot of it was never proven completely by historians as fact for lack of tangible evidence.

About Archiology some artifacts have been found in digs that helped to substantiate that these places and people actually did exist, which that in itself has fascinated me at every find through the years. I'm probably not adding to much more to what you already knew but I agree that that much of the bibble is bassed on religious faith and beliefs rather then proven fact.

As for Joan of Arc I didn't see the silent black and white movie but I did see the black and white talkie once when I was a kid and it did move me emotinally.

As for mistreatment of children I wouldn't want to be around some one that was mistreating children because I don't think they would have to worry about going to prison. What a great interview, thanks for posting LittleMiss. It also added to my 'to read' list - so I'll have to go online at the library and see if I can find some of these.

I just love Powell's. They seem like a bookstore that actually are there to make readers happy. That's my kind of bookstore! I wish they were a tad bit closer though...
