FINALLY! Golden Globes won... are the Oscars next? After 7 years of work and two completed films denied the top prizes at most awards shows, Peter Jackson and The Lord of the Rings finally won top honors at the Golden Globe awards last night. Now, I usually don't grant much credit to those who vote on awards like these (or even the Oscars) but seeing as how I'm in NZ right now, and these people have been waiting for YEARS to see their favorite son get some real worldwide accolades for these films, it's kind of close to home right now. PJ was on the front page of the Auckland paper this morning, kissing one of his Golden Globes. Down in Wellington (his home town) their probably planning a parade! Now, the question is, does this mean that LOTR will finally make some Oscar noise? Will a fantasy film win for best picture and best director... FINALLY? What do you think?

To clarify, Lord of the Rings one four globes: Best dramatic film, Best Director, Best original score - motion picture, Best original song - motion picture, All the acting ones went to Mystic River which must have been remarkable film. I'm surprised the Kiwi's haven't made it a public holiday! ![]() As for the OSCA's, ROTK stands as a favourite, but I wonder how much Holywood politics will appear.

On the Hollywood politics side, it would look good for Hollywood to FINALLY choose a fantasy film for it's top award. They like the publicity of "setting new records" and this would be the first fantasy film to win the Best Picture Oscar, so.... Actually, the Kiwi's are excited because they (in some way) are nominated for 16 Academy Awards this year. They're really excited that Kesha (from Whale Rider) was nominated for Best Actress, setting another new record: Youngest actor EVER to be nominated in the category! It led the news all day yesterday and was the front page story today. Of course, the 11 nominations for ROTK is the majority of those 16, but the Kiwi's claim all of them. ![]() And they just had a holiday this past Monday, and the kid's just went back to school, so it's too early for another holiday. Maybe on Oscar night.... :naughty:

I think its got a decent chance of getting the awards. I wouldn't think its a certainty, but the best chance of the lot. Oh and LOTR has the most nominations of any trilogy at the oscars, beating both Star Wars and The Godfather. ![]()

Best chance of the three... I agree with Shaun on this one. Of the three LOTR films, this one has the best chance of winning the Best Picture Oscar. I think many members of the academy were waiting to see the last one before they really made a decision about it as a whole. After all, it IS one looooonnnng film. By waiting to see ROTK before granting the Oscar win, voters, in a way, are voting on the entire work, not just one third of it. I think that was the biggest problem faced by FOTR. TTT was at even more of a disadvantage because it was the middle of an epic story that required the viewer to have seen the first part, and left many general audience members (who hadn't read the book) wondering where the rest of the story was. TTT was also nominated for the fewest number of awards. I think ROTK has a MUCH greater chance than the previous two, as beautiful and well done as they were.

Looking at the bookies odds for Best Picture (1:3), if the OSCA is to maintain any credibility ROTK must win. After that, well they do have something of a love affair with Clint Eastwood (or perhaps they are scared of the dirty great gun ) so Mystic River is going to be a strong contender for Director and anywhere else they come head to head, like Adaptation.Score, effects and costume must be other hot favourites for ROTK. Certainly Master and Commander can't match the grandier

In the past several rainy days, I've seen a few "contenders" and not all of them are that strong. Sure Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, and Tom Cruise are good actors, but their current films aren't all that great. Just because it's dramatic, or sad, or even entertaining doesn't mean it's Oscar-worthy. I was actually pretty disappointed in Cold Mountain, Master and Commander and the Last Samurai. I LOVE Jude and Russ, but the films, while good, were by no means the best films these guys have done... nor are they of the same calibur as ROTK. Now, of the other films actually nominated for best film or best director, I haven't seen them all, nor do I want to. I was never interested in seeing Mystic River or Lost in Translation (which I barely heard of) and I think those are the biggest competition for our film. ![]() So, where do our votes stand?

The second preliminary for the Oscas, the BAFTA's has been played with ROTK coming in with 5 awards:- Best Film, Film of the Year (Audience) Adapted Screenplay Visual Effects Cinematography In most of the other categories it was pipped by Master and Commander, which took Best Director among others. Things are not going to be as clear cut as they look.

Well it looks like ROTk did get a few oscars after all, all eleven they were nominated for. Equal top number of oscars awarded for a movie and biggest clean sweep. What a great achievement for PJ and co.
