Not a very fair question!

The LOTR and Star Wars stories are as different to each other as the two sets of Star Wars films are to each other.

The only thing they share is that the early SW and LOTR were the most expensive films ever produced (at the time), big box office hits (for different audiences) and pushed the SFX budgets.

Early Star Wars was most definitely a kid's action/adventure that worked for adults, whilst LOTR is a more mature adventure that works for kids.

Sadly, I don't think the newer SW films manage that breadth of appeal. So they loose.

You can't compare the technologies or races either.

Fairer would be to compare the two sets of SW I think?

Hi ray gower!

i dont think that u understand wat i mean. SW vs LOTR is not really that much about how similar they are, the only similarity the 2 successes need is that theyre both simply amazing and have a scifi or fantasy theme. its just a very simple question, its about which of the 2 is better at wat it does and gives. Obviously i kno that theyre very different from each other, u dont have 2 compare them in wat theyre both about.
...its just, SIMPLY, which is the better scifi-fantasy of the 2, in wat they offer 4 themselves?
And actually i do think that both films have some similarities

I think Ray is right. The two are so different, star wars would be better off battling it out with star trek. LOTR is in a completely different class.

I mean I love both star wars and LOTR. Star wars is a great sci-fi action film series and brilliant when you want to just sit down and watch a film that's not to serious. It has fantastic battles and race scenes, and some of the best creatures made.

LOTR on the other hand has a very complex back story, is acted with perfection has state of the act effects and sort of sucks you into the Tolkien world (you really did feel for Frodo and the other members of the fellowship).

Okay...if these two great film series where to meet in battle then LOTR would annihilate Star wars.

The Fellowship of the Ring was BRILLIANT, The Two Towers was even Better, but, The Return of the King is without doubt the greatest film ever made. The LOTR trilogy RULES!

It's not even close. LOTR is a literary masterpiece while Star Wars, although excellent for what it is, is just movie fiction. You can't go to college and get a degree with SW but you can with Tolkien.

I'll have to agree with Evolution and roadster

I was around when Star Wars first came out (one of the few I actually saw at the cinema) and it was a very good story and film in it's day. However, LOTR tells a much better and eaiser paced story with the ability to pull you in and make you part of it. I've only seen the first 2 so far, but look forward to seeing The Return of the King as soon as it comes out on VHS

Done the Star Wars vs Star Trek here- http://www.ascifi.com/forums/showthr...threadid=11220

But Battlestar Galactica, now that could be interesting?

Actually, I think there are some similarities:

Both tell the story of the journey of the reluctant hero. If you include the Hobbit, then both sagas tell the story over two generations of one family. Both have evil villains seduced by the power of the dark side of the magic/Force in Saruman and Vader. But neither Sauron nor the Emperor can rely on magic/the Force alone to defeat their enemies and need conventional armies.

Saruman versus Count Dooku might be an interesting match.

I'm not sure how the Uruk-hai versus Clone Army would turn out, but I'm sure that Middle Earth has no defence against a Death Star.

Both LOTR and SW are brilliant in their own right but as others have said they're both very different. Saying that I would have to say LOTR is much better, it has so much more depth to it and you feel involved with the character's stuggles in a way you never did with SW.

I don't know if anyone has read it but there's an article on The Onion about these two which isn't exactly what this discussion is about but I found it very funny.

Thats easy, Lotr wins by a landslide, star wars are not as good, the original ones are better then the new ones, but Lotr beats um all.
