But for the most part, because of the SFX of the times, and actors being human shaped, I suspect that was why in the first two films they were like that... Then I think someone with a CGI fetish thought it might be a good idea to create something different on the Penal Colony... But then in 4 they couldn't do something newer, because of the action being on board a ship - though the swimming aliens was good...
Again, with the "dog-legged" shape, that will have been down to a bit of CGI manipulation, and the "copy of a copy of a copy..." may not have been thought of...
