No, I read on tor.net that it had been taken out, because they still had to fit in some stuff from TTT - the book - that they'd left out.

The chapters not in the movie but it's not because of that reason. They didn't put it in because they thought it was too anticlimatic for the film.

I think it's a shame, its important character building, and ... it's just ... ROTK!

It would appear that the removal of the scouring of the Shire is now undebatable.

Saruman's last fling in Middle Earth, the razing of the Shire, is all but confirmed by the news that Saruman will not appear in the cinema cut of ROTK.

Personally I think it is going to be a major downer on the film. The Scouring forms a major counterpoint to the rest of the story.

Okay it is not as exciting as throwing the ring into the pit, but it shows the scale of the war and how it falls on everybody for good or ill, then how things recover to almost as it was.

It also shows how all of the hobbits have been affected by the 'War' and not just Frodo's obvious change.

Do you know if they're still putting the Grey Havens in the film?

I've no idea.
I suspect it will be skated over as a voice over like the introduction in FOTR.
Overall I think that is about all it needs?

I agree on that, it's just really rounding off the story giving it a sense of conclusion.
