| I've got it! I forgot where this was discussed, I can't find the original mention, but anyway, somewhere someone was wondering how R2 could know how to find obi and whatnot if he had a memory wipe. Or something, for some reason it was suggested that he must've had one because he didn't remember being on tatooine. Grr, wish I could remember exactly what was said. ANYWAY. The point is, I'm staring at ANH right now and it's rather obvious, threepio doesn't remember because he probably did get wiped regularly (which is also why he doens't really have much personality). However, artoo somehow avoided said memory wipes, he remembers fine. I think he lies, LOL, but he remembers. That's how he knew to find the nearby settlements, remember when threepio asks "how do you know settlements are that way?". And how he knew where to go to find obi. And all that fun stuff. ![]() If this is stupid and redundant, ignore me. |

| Maybe redundant, but not stupid. ![]() I think you've got it right. I honestly don't think Artoo has ever had a memory wipe. It's entirely possible that he's upgraded himself so his storage capacity for memory is greater than other R2 units of his generation. He's quite clever... for a droid, that is. ![]() |

3PO on the other hand, he is such a hypochondriac worrier that it would be hard to imagine him not spilling the wrong beans at the wrong time. Also, I wonder why Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru didn't acknowledge how strange it was for the same droid to find its way back to their home on Tatooine after leaving with Anakin. Assuming of course that they know more about the backstory of Anakin and Darth Vader than they let on.

I don't mind Lucas taking some liberties with plausabilty and continuity between the two trilogies, as long as there aren't any inconsistencies that are too glaring. edited to add: I was referring to C3PO - even if everyone's favourite camp android had had its memory wiped, the Lars should remember him from Tatooine - wasn't he there when Anakin and Padme returned in Ep2?

| HeyLynny: Told what to R2? And as for Owen and Beru recognizing 3PO or R2, remember that these are "just droids," so in the grand scheme of things, Owen and Beru have probably seen dozens of R2 units and at least several protocol droids. They didn't buy 3PO knowing his designation, and after twenty-plus years of surviving on Tattooine, probably wouldn't have remembered 3PO's anyway. All protocol droids have similar coverings, so 3PO isn't all that unique on the outside. It's his personality that made him so different... and the fact that he was a custom-made droid. ![]() And in general, all droids in the SW universe are memory-wiped from time to time, or they start developing quirks that the owners don't want to put up with. I think R2D2 has managed to avoid it by disguising his behavior. For some reason (and I'd like to see the story of his origins) he's able to predict human actions and either put himself in a position of being forgotten or he simply acts as the humans would want him to act, thus avoiding any detrimental memory wipes or other modification. Or maybe Padme issued an order before she went from Queen to Senator that this particular droid was never to be wiped as long as it served her and her family. Remember, he was still Leia's at the beginning of ANH, then Luke's, so he's always been in Padme's family's possession... for as long as we've known him, anyway. ![]() |

| Ahhhh. Actually, I doubt that R2 ever knew exactly where Obi-Wan is. He's kind of in hiding, remember. He's not even using the name of Obi-Wan anymore. I think all Leia told him was whom to look for. It was up to R2 to figure out where to look. But I am sure that he remembers the younger Obi-Wan from many, many years earlier. Obviously, he didn't know what Obi-Wan looked like later because he was afraid of the old man when he finally appeared. He just remembered the name... and probably the name Skywalker, too. ![]() |
