"I Am Your Father" This one single line changed everything in the Star Wars universe. This was the best plot twist Lucas came up with. Darth Vader being Luke's father who was once known as Anakin Skywalker(We learn his name in ROTJ). I remember reading A New Hope and Luke's father didn't have a name. I also remember reading something in which Lucas was going to have it that Darth Vader somehow threw Luke's father into the molton pit killing him. This gave the vader character purpose IMHO. I hated him up until then. He had no identity, killed poor Obi-Wan, tortured Leia, and so on. Now there was a name for the face behind the mask. Luke ultimately redeems him but sadly he dies.

I agree, only I think that it was Lucas' intention to mislead us from the very start. I expect that the ghostwriter of the book of 'A New Hope' wasn't let in on the full story. Don't forget that Lucas had the bare outlines of Episodes I - III even before he made 'A New Hope'. I also heard the 'molten pit' story and I think we will still see that in Episode III, only it will be Anakin versus his old master, Obi-Wan. And he didn't kill Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan became "More Powerful than you can imagine", whatever that means. Maybe Episode III will tell us more about dead Jedi. I certainly want all the loose ends tied up properly.

I've just bought the boxed set of original trilogy videos. I use the excuse that my son is obsessed by them, but really they are for me. Anyway, I went straight to my favourite film 'The Empire Strikes Back' and watched it tonight. I guess that sequence does make the whole film. I think it is probably 80% of the reason why it is such a good film. That and the fact that Darth Vader gets much more time to just be totally evil and do his stuff. I also think that quite a lot of the surprise in ESB is lost on the new generation of fans. My son knows who Yoda is from Eps I & II, so all that messing about in the cave, prentending he is stupid is lost.
