The Henson Family Bought Back The Jim Henson Co.!

David Kemper on Brian Henson

In light of the fact that The Jim Henson Company has been bought by the Henson family, we'd like to highlight the role of Brian Henson in the life of Farscape and the passion that he has for this show.

From the Farscape: The Illustrated Companion by Paul Simpson and David Hughes:

"The last word on the genesis of the series goes to David Kemper: 'Brian Henson did something that people don't do in this business. You work for big companies, and they're institutions. A project dies, and it dies. Your executives go and hire other writers, they create something else. But Brian, stunningly, had a passion for this show, and because it was a family-owned company, with him in charge, no one was telling him, 'You have to let go of your dreams.' So Brian held on to his dream, and Brian made the show go. 'There's a lot of people that there'd be no Farscape without, but in the very beginning there'd be no Farscape if Brian Henson hadn't held on for five years and said, 'I'm going to make Farscape. I don't care what they tell me, who gets in my way, how the obstacles are thrown, I'm not letting the show die.' Rock and I, we had to go off and make a living. Brian made a living too, but he never let go, and obviously he was right. Son of a gun, he sold it! There's no Farscape if Rock doesn't write any scripts, but boy, there would be no Farscape if Brian Henson hadn't gone back and sold what was essentially a dead project, and resurrected it. Brian KNEW that he could produce a good show, and he made it live through that act of dedication.' "

and a little more . . .

German media company EM.TV announced it is selling The Jim Henson Company, back to the Henson family. Brian Henson, son of the late Jim Henson, announced that he, his sisters Lisa, Cheryl and Heather, and his brother, John, have signed a definitive agreement to acquire The Jim Henson Company from EM.TV & Merchandising AG for $78 million in cash. The sale agreement still requires approval by EM.TV shareholders, to be presented at the EM.TV shareholder annual meeting on July 20. Completion of the transaction is expected to take place within ten weeks. Upon completion of the sale transaction, all five siblings will take their place on the company's board of directors. Brian and Lisa Henson will be actively involved in the company's management.

Brian Henson: "I am absolutely thrilled that Lisa, Cheryl, John, Heather and I will acquire the company our father founded some 45 years ago. This has been a very challenging period for The Jim Henson Company. But the company has achieved some great things over the past few years, continues to have great assets and, we firmly believe, has great potential. Our commitment, as the Jim Henson Company's new owners and as Jim Henson's children, is to preserve and enhance those assets, fully realize that potential, and thereby honor our father's legacy."

EM.TV spokesman Frank Elsner declined to name other bidders or to specify whether the Henson family submitted the highest bid, but said the Henson children's ''was in the end the most attractive offer.'' Among those reportedly interested was the Walt Disney Co.

Assets of The Jim Henson Company to be acquired in the transaction announced today include The Muppets, The Muppet Babies, The Fraggles, Farscape and Bear in the Big Blue House. The company's principal operations include Henson Television, Jim Henson Pictures, Jim Henson Interactive, Jim Henson Home Entertainment, the Henson Recording Studio, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

WOW! Maybe they'll make a Farscape movie now. Too bad they're not buying the Scifi channel too.
