I think all the hype (pardon the pun Andreas) over Dan Brown was that he took a fascinating mystery of history that historians and theologians and amateur sleuths have been pondering over for ages and put it out there in the mainstream for common joes to enjoy. It wasn't spectacular writing or wonderful plotlines that made it such a hot property. It was an illustration of one of life's true imponderables - put out in an easy to digest form. Nobody knows the true answers and probably never will but now millions more people out there have some fascinating fat to chew on. People love unsolveable puzzles. Makes 'em want to try and solve them all the more.
