In the correct running order, which Fox didn't respect much, the episode "Heart of Gold" was to have been aired before "Objects in Space".
It is the tale of our crew defending a brothel from a greedy local autocrat.

The scripts from the unaired episodes were auctioned off on ebay a few weeks ago for an obscene amount of money, and following that, this script was transcribed and posted online, on the Fox Firefly message boards. It was subsequently removed, but people cleverly copied it and posted it elsewhere.

If you have half an hour to spare I highly recommend taking a look at this script. There is some speculation that it might not be genuine, but if not, it is extremely sophisticated fanfic, and worth a look anyway.

Very interesting developments for Mal, and also for the ship's marrieds.

I tried to make sense of it.
Guess I am just not that good with scripts!

Otherwise it looked like a rehash of the Magnificent Seven Ride, but with a hint more humour.

As for Mal, is he getting soft, or starting to understand the difference between a whore and a companion?

Not too bad for a shoot'um'up western. Showed the evil villain pitted odds against the defenseless (almost) group of women. As always, the bad guy looses and the hero’s win. Didn’t end quit like I expected though. Could have done without the extended heat scene, just a hint would have been fine.

I don’t think he’s getting soft but that it’s been there all along. He’s just too scared to let his feelings show and in doing so thinks it would make him weak. Inara has the same problem to a bit of a lesser degree but still there. The both have too much pride and stubbornness to let the other know their feelings and as a result will never get together. But then if they did, there would go part of the attraction of the show. Of course that’s just a woman’s viewpoint. :lol:

I looked at the script and it looked pretty correct except for a couple of spots (I’ll go back and see if I pick them up the same as written). By the large, it’s pretty close.

I would rate this as one of the worst episodes, simply because the script is nothing original -- it is an old story 'The Seven Samurai'/'Magnificent Seven' -- except that they didn't all die at the end.

Was the character of Inara really to leave and to be written out if the series continued? I didn't understand the scene in 'Objects in Space' until I saw the end of this episode. If so, it would have added more angst if, instead of her friend, she had slept with Mal and then died here. Mal could then have become dark and moody, rather than embarrassed and regretful.
