The bit about Spike being the vamp who killed Wood's mum - well, that was less they planned it out, than that they decided at the last minute b/c they 'forgot' about Spike for about the 1st half of the season -- (he was in that basement for 6 episodes - he was 'freed' in "Him") --

Or - that's my theory --

I knew they were talkin' about Spike too - I'm not sure it was really supposed to be a 'surprise' (if it was, they failed miserably) - but - it works and keeps some continuity to the series (which I like lots) -- oh - and hey - it gives both Wood and Spike 'something to do' --- check it out - some ficus plants get to be actual moving, usable characters! <snerk>
